Down and Dirty Reviews: Gameboy -- N - Z
"Welcome all Gameboy users!" Still need more reviews, eh? Well, here they are. All reviews are by StarSoldier unless noted.

The overall scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sounds, and game play are out of 10.

SCORE  NAME

72 NEMESIS (Ultra, 1990)
This is the first ever Gradius game on the Gameboy but it comes with a brand new name now. This game has 5 grueling levels to master if you want to see the galaxy saved from destruction and the graphics are fairly impressive for a game this old. Nemesis is a great shooter for fans of the legendary Gradius series like me.

70 NINJA GAIDEN SHADOW (Tecmo, 1991)

Here is the lesser known Ninja Gaiden that came out for the old Black and White Gameboy and it's actually not too bad considering it's so ancient. This plays just like the NES titles and it even has similar graphics and sounds so if you liked those games then try this one too.

70 OPERATION C (Ultra/Konami, 1990)

This plays just like a Contra game on NES but there are now only 4 levels and it's only an one player game too. Operation C is still a great run and gun action game nonetheless with a lot of crazy enemies to waste and you better believe its superior to those awful Playstation games.

36 PAC MAN (Namco, 1992)
Yes, it's actually Pac Man on the old Game boy here. The only question is why? You would think it could be good since it's an arcade classic where you eat pellets and avoid ghosts. Sadly, it just does not feel the same in black & white and I actually liked the awful Atari 2600 version better than this believe it or not.

77 POKEMON GOLD OR SILVER (Nintendo/Game Freak, 2000)
Other than the colours added to the Game boy Color it feels like the same old Pokemon game from two years ago though. Even the graphics and sound still look pretty bad. Now there are 250 pokemon to find in these games and if you're a fan of the series then this is still sure to please.

The StarSoldier Game of the Month!
86 POKEMON RED or BLUE (Nintendo/Game freak, 1998)
Before you dismiss the Pokemon franchise as some kiddy fad, this game is a great new spin on the standard Role Playing Game and even experienced gamers like me can have fun here. Instead of fighting monster all the time while you try to gain experience, why not just collect them as pets?! Versions Blue and Red are the original two games that started this whole Pocket Monster craze and took the world by the balls in a vice grip. You start the game in a small town and you have been given a special gift from monster studier Professor Oak. He gives you the option to select from one of three unique monsters encased in small pocket sized balls and then you can begin your long adventure to find them all. You can carry up to 6 pocket balls at once but you can also find other monsters and store them in a Pokemon data base to help Oak get some info on these wild creatures. Although the other games in the series haven't deferred too much from the first ones here, it just goes to show you how good the originals actually were.

60 POKEMON YELLOW (Nintendo/Game Freak, 1999)
Sure, it's really the same old game for people who have Pokemon Red and Blue but the popular little yellow rat (the popular Pikachu) follows you around this time and a little bit of colour as been added for the Game Boy Color owners out there as well. Yellow is a good game for die hard fans of the series but there is nothing too new here to justify spending more money for the rest of the casual gamers.

77 POKEMON PINBALL (Nintendo/Game Freak, 2000)
Here is a cool set of two pinball game tables where you try to catch all the 151 Pokemon all over again. It's a lot harder than it looks so you want to keep the kids away but it was still lots of fun for the more experienced gamer who also like Pinball and Pokemon too.

75 POWER QUEST (Sunsoft, 1999)
Here is a Gameboy fighting game that actually plays pretty well even with only two buttons here. In the game you can select from one of five different toy robots and then earn experience along the way in local schoolyards and tournament battles. Power Quest is easy to pick up and is very addictive as well.

67 QIX (Nintendo/Taito, 1992)

This addictive arcade classic also came to the Gameboy. It's still just like all the other versions out there so you must survive by drawing your way out of trouble to score points. It's simple but it works. Sadly there is no save option even though this was released during the 90's.

51 REN & STIMPY: Veedoits (THQ, 1992)
This is better than the last Game Boy adventure featuring the wacky cartoon duo but that's not saying too much, eh? This plays just like the Super Nintendo 2D action game of the same name minus the colour of course.

58 R TYPE (Irem, 1990)
If you want a arcade perfect of the arcade legend then get the Turbografx-16 or Playstation versions instead of this edition. So why is it so bad? Well, levels 4 and 5 are missing from the arcade game altoghter and the game looks very questionable as well. Still I guess its OK for the GB and if you love shoot em ups on the go this is all right.

52 R TYPE II (Irem)
*Japanese
R Type II is not a huge improvement over the original R Type I for the GB and where is level 4 now? The Game boy edition is still only one few ways to play this rare arcade classic since it wasn't ported to that many machines out there, just don't expect anything too special either.

62 R TYPE DX (Nintendo/Irem, 1987/2000)
Two great R type shooting games in one package sounds like a really great idea but sadly they are not the best translations in the world unfortunately. R Type DX is actually just the older game boy titles of R Type and R Type II (R Type II was only released in Japan for the Game boy and wasn't released over here originally) but now these classic shooters are in colour plus you can even save your high scores and continue your progress thanks to a level select feature but is the game still good enough especially when the limited Game boy Color is still only a 8-bit machine? "I at least want to thank Nintendo for trying to make a great set of shooters for the Game boy Color but they should have waited for the games to go on the Advance instead!"

57 SAGAIA (Taito)
*Japanese
The kind of popular 2D fish blasting shooter also arrives on the Gameboy. OK, it's not as good as the 32-bit and 16-bit versions of Darius, but it's cool little shooter once you get fully powered up. I miss the level selects and the above average music from the other version like the one found on the Sega Genesis and the Sega Master System games but at least its better than Solar Striker.

36 SAMURAI SHODOWN (Takana/SNK, 1994)
This is a super deformed remake of the famous SNK arcade fighting game where 12 warriors battle one on one with various weapons. Although all the characters are here and they even have all their special moves, it just looks too silly since they all overly cartoonish now and that's not a good thing for a fighter of the caliber of Samurai Shodown. Even the game play is a lot slower now. In other words 'I want blood!' Get the 3DO or Neo Geo versions instead.

50 SIMPSONS: Escape From CAMP DEADLY (Acclaim, 1990)
The first ever Simpsons Game boy title is this hard little action title starring Bart and Lisa Simpson has they try to make their way out of the worst summer camp ever. Although the graphics were somewhat nice for the game back in 1990 at least, the game itself is very confusing to play and even cheap in places.

60 SOLAR STRIKER (Nintendo, 1989)

Although this sounds like a decent enough game, this is merely a simple old school vertical shooter with only 7 levels and a very limited power up system. Solar Striker was only fun for a couple of days and then I was able to finished it. Hard reality then sets in because there wasn't any reason to keep on playing this one. Solar Striker could have been great if there was more features added.

38 SPACE INVADERS (Nintendo/Taito, 1997)
This is a very standard arcade shooting game that was huge in 1978 but this type of game can bore today's audience way too quickly. Space Invaders works great on the Super Gameboy but a save feature and some better presentation would have been nice because this isn't the 70's anymore guys.

30 STREET FIGHTER II (Nintendo/Capcom, 1994)
With only two buttons on the Game boy itself, choppy animation, and only 9 fighters, this is not really worth picking up especially if you have a more powerful console. I wish there was an NES version instead of this awful edition.

88 SUPER MARIO BROS. DX (Nintendo, 1985, 2000)
This here is a awesome remake of the original Super Mario Bros. from the NES that comes loaded with all new modes like time trials, the near complete game of Super Mario Bros. 2 (the Japanese game anyway), VS. mode and of course the classic game play we all know and love from 1985.

77 SUPER MARIO LAND (Nintendo, 1989)

Just like the original Super Mario Bros. in a way on the original NES but there are only 12 levels here and there are very few power ups too. The game is solid but it's also one of Mario's weaker platforming titles since the controls feel a bit stiff. Still a fun action game with some decent shooting stages.

87 SUPER MARIO LAND 2: 6 golden coins (Nintendo, 1992)
This is a very cool sequel to the first Game boy adventure that introduced the evil Wario to the world of gaming. This game even kind of looks like Super Mario World too if the animation wasn't cut back and that alone makes it worth looking into.

78 TETRIS (Nintendo, 1989)
Simply put, Tetris is a very addictive Russian puzzle that came packed in with the original Gameboy after Nintendo won a big lawsuit over Atari during the late 1980's. The objective is simple here: just to guide your falling blocks well enough so you can make lines disappear but with advancing speed and random sets even that isn't always that easy. The graphics are boring and I wish there was a save option but Tetris is still a classic puzzler that is on high demand and with good reason.

65 TETRIS BLAST (Nintendo/Bullet Proof, 1995)
Nintendo had made millions off Tetris and they wanted milk it for everything its worth so here we have Tetris Blast. It's still a good game of Tetris but it's also a little confusing at times thanks to the strange new bomb mode. If you want more Tetris then try this out for size.

95 TETRIS DX (Nintendo, 1999)

One of the coolest games ever gets the improvements it needed on the small screen. Tetris DX is even more competitive than ever thanks to the top three records for every speed being saved right to the gamepak. If you love Tetris then this is the one to get.

69 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: Fall of the Foot Clan (Ultra, 1990)
It plays ok and it's also very easy to learn action platformer so it's great for anyone of any age especially for those Turtles fans still out there. Don't expect any thing too great in terms of action though since it's a very short and easy game.

74 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 (Konami, 1991)
It's a sequel to the popular original but it is still very average as far as action games go. This game should keep the kids happy but I don't think most of them are into Ninja Turtles anymore, uh? The game is still a typical 2D action game like the first one but now the graphics are cleaner and the turtles have a few new moves so there is more variety now.

50 WARIO'S BLAST (Nintendo/Hudson Soft, 1995)
Wario has sure starred in a lot of weird games, eh? It's all bomberman style game play here but for whatever reason the evil Wario invades in on the action and no nobody seems to care. Not one of Wario's or Bomberman's bigger hits.

63 WARIO LAND: Super Mario Land 3 (Nintendo, 1994)
Wario Land is a very disappointing action game that was suppose to be the sequel to Super Mario Land 2 but Wario takes over for some odd reason. Wario just feels out of place as the hero here and it doesn't help when the game is not very compelling.

69 WARIO LAND II (Nintendo, 1999)
It's better than the first action based Wario game on the Game Boy but the main problem I have here is that there is hardly no real challenge in this game at all. Unfortunately and that's what most Wario games lack.

25 YAR'S REVENGE (Telegames/Atari, 2000)

The Atari legend comes to back to the lime light thanks to Telegames but what could have been an awesome remake on the GBC ended up with some problems that really ruin the whole experience. Yar's Revenge is basically the same weird bug shooter from the early 1980's where you try to destroy a enemy nest. The biggest issue here is the new zoomed in view so you can't see all the action like when the nest throws the deadly spiral at you plus the graphics and sound have not been improved much at all from the ancient Atari 2600 days. Yar's Revenge for the GBC is a waste of time even for retro freaks.

88 ZELDA: Link's Awakening (Nintendo, 1997)
Here is a fun and very challenging Zelda game that would be the first in the series to arrive on the old Game boy. The story here is Link was sailing on the high seas but things went horribly wrong when a big storm hits. Now you help Link escape a strange island with a very familiar look. Link's Awakening isn't much too look at but the game play is still as addictive as ever.

50 ZELDA: Link's Awakening DX (Nintendo, 1999)
Just like the original Zelda Link's Awakening but only now in it's colour plus there is one new bonus dungeon if you have a Color or Advance unit. That's it pretty much for new stuff unfortunately. I would still get this one if you haven't played Link's Awakening already but other than that the new dungeon it's just isn't worth the 40 bucks.

87 ZELDA: Oracle of Seasons (Nintendo/Capcom, May 2001)
It's always great when another Legend of Zelda game comes along but this new Zelda is one half of a two set series created by Capcom (from Mega Man, Side Arms, and Resident Evil fame) and not by Nintendo this time. This review is about The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, a game that adds an environment change to the mix (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter of course). With excellent use of puzzles, new items, and action this game has it all and it will keep you busy for a while. The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons is a great buy for Game boy Color owners.
