GAME OF THE MONTH COLLECTION!
PARASOL STARS
(Working Designs/Taito, 1991)

Introduction and Story:

Back in the 80's Taito created the timeless arcade classic Bubble Bobble. If you don't know that awesome game it was a unique action platformer where one or two players control cute little dinosaur creatures on a mission to rescue their girlfriends across 100 stages filled with monsters. The game spawned several sequels including titles where the dinos return to their original human form like in this amazing card here. Parasol Stars is a fun and chaotic sequel to Rainbow Islands as the human versions of Bob and Bub continue their adventures in a overly cute but still dangerous world. The two kids dropped the whole rainbow thing from the last game and are carrying cute but deadly umbrellas instead.

The game play and bottomline:
OK, using a parasol as a weapon sounds kinda fruity, believe me these things pack a serious punch. The cool thing about these umbrellas is they can catch any of the loose bubbles on stages and whip them across the screen to either grab power ups or use them on your enemies just like the original Bubble Bobble. These weapons of mass destruction can also be used as shields from enemy fire and can slow down during a fall so I guess they do more then protect these guys from the rain.

Of course you're going to need everything you got here because there are loads of different enemies and planets that range from the musical world where industments coming to life to even battling it out in casinos where a showgirl is the boss.

This game really reminds me why the original Bubble Bobble was so fun. The game has loads of power ups and secrets, there are tons of levels all with cartoon-like graphics and sounds the series is known for, plus the game has great co-op game play where you can either help or get in the way of your friend. I usually turn on my friend by the way. Parasol Stars is pretty weird and the action can get repetitive (especially the music) but this game is so big and fun to play that it's definitely worth a try.
Here is my 5 minute video review of Parasol Stars too!
Warning: there is some swearing in it:
