Down and Dirty Reviews:  Super Nintendo F - M

Nintendo says that this system is still alive, but we haven't seen a new game since Frogger in 1998.  Oh well, there's still a huge collection of SNES games here and a lot of goods ones too.  Choose wisely now. All reviews are by StarSoldier unless noted.

FAMILY DOG (Malibu, 1993)
Not only is this another license game we don't need (a rather bad license at that too since the TV show only lasted a few weeks on the air) but Family Dog is about as boring as a video game could get. In it you control a wimpy little dog that must avoid household hazards and family members to survive. Sure that sounds pretty bad but it gets worse because the controls are awkward, the graphics are nothing special and the levels are way too long. Family Dog should have been put to sleep.

55 FAMILY FEUD (Gametek, 1993)
This is a good version of the famous family TV show where 2 families of five try to answer various surveys with the best possible response by slowly typing it in with a controller. Family Feud is a good 2 player game and the graphics and audio are not too bad here either but needless to say the whole game show thing wears very thin after a while and unless you like the show you probably won't like the game either.

63 FATAL FURY (Tanaka/SNK, 1993)

In this classic one on one beat em up you pick from 3 fighters and try and go after the boss of South Town in the first ever Fatal Fury game. This was definitely a big hit for the folks at SNK but this version has some cutdown animation, less detail, and some of the cinemas are gone now too. Also since this game is the first in the series a lot of cheap hits for some unfair game play is still here. Like my unwashed socks, Fatal Fury doesn't age very well but there are worst fighters for the Snes.

69 FATAL FURY 2 (Tanaka/SNK, 1994)

The Fatal Fury series continues and now you have the option to pick from 8 unique fighters including new comers the sexy Mai, Big Bear (formerly Raiden), Kim, and Jubei. The one on one fighting is much slower and less detailed than the original Neo Geo game but the game is still kind of fun to play being able to jump between the foreground and background in some stages is cool. It's a shameless Street Fighter II ripoff but it's still one of the better ones.

66 FATAL FURY SPECIAL (Natsume/SNK, 1995)
This upgrade lets you pick from a huge list of 15 fighters including a hidden character from the Art of Fighting series. Fatal Fury Special is a good game to pick up if you're a fight fan but a lot of the problems with the last edition like unbalanced critical moves that are hard as hell to pull off are still here. Don't expect anything too 'Special'.

65 FIGHTERS HISTORY (Data East, 1994)

I actually remember Capcom tried to sue Data East because this one on one fighting game looked too much like their Street Fighter 2. After playing the game I can see their point. Fighters History is a basic and very unoriginal 20 meg fighter that lacks the superior balance and personality of SF2 yet a lot of characters look very familiar in design. Capcom lost the case by the way so video game companies everywhere could freely make there own crappy clones.

78 FINAL FANTASY II (Square, 1991)

Final Fantasy II was easily one of Square's most popular video games and it sure turned a lot of heads when the old Super Nintendo first arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy IV is still a little too linear for an RPG for my liking because the game's well writen storyline kind of limits the game play. For example; you have to lose to your friend Kain no matter how well you fight when you have to fight him one on one. That was pretty lame! Final Fantasy IV has its problems but it still has a good flow to the game so chances are you'll still be hooked after a few hours of playing. If you are Role Playing nut then Final Fantasy II will keep you playing but don't expect very deep game play here especially if your use to other Final Fantasies.

FINAL FANTASY III (Square, 1994)
After a rather long wait Final Fantasy comes back with more turn based craziness and plot twists. Part III is a epic 32 meg quest to over throw a evil empire, but unfortunately as the game progresses that will be the least of yours problems. The game's Esper magic system was a good idea and list of weapons and items is off the charts too. If that wasn't enough it even comes with 14 different and wacky characters here. In the end it's simply one of the best Final Fantasy's ever made and is far better than Final Fintasy II in my opinion. This was originally named Final Fantasy VI in Japan.

71 Final Fantasy MYSTIC QUEST (Square, 1992)
This spin off of the popular Final Fantasy plays more like a Zelda game this time around which I guess isn't a bad idea. The game now has a hero that can jump and use a weapon in real time but he can only have one partner at a time for some dumb reason and the turn based battles are very basic. The game is still very fun to play but it isn't very complex and some gamers may find it way too easy.

The Total Recall Dud of the Month!
38 FINAL FIGHT (Capcom, 1991)

This popular mission based fighting game may have been an huge arcade hit but the SNES version here has no two player option, the sexy girlcops are now missing, and even actual levels are now gone. Although beating up a bunch of street punks sounds cool Final Fight for the SNES here is a bitter disapointment, especially compared to the Sega CD version.

30 FINAL FIGHT GUY (Blockbuster/Capcom, 1994)

This once Rental only title is the same Final Fight game from a few years back, but 'the wife beater' Cody has now been replaced with the red ninja Guy. Sadly, nothing has really changed overall, it's just a stupid tradeoff from a lazy game company. There is still no two player mode, the female cops are still missing, and fighting the same old goons over and over again gets very boring. The game still sucks and I could think of way better Japanese games to bring over, eh Blockbuster!

60 FINAL FIGHT 2 (Capcom, 1993)

Part II is hardly any different that the first Final Fight game at all but at least it is officially a two player game now which is something new for the series on the Super Nintendo. This so called new game comes with 6 levels where you battle against gang members from around the world and 3 characters to select from too (Haggar, some lame guy with a sword, and this underdressed chick) and that should sound an unoriginal red flag right there. Final Fight 2 actually starts out fun but quickly turns a very tedious beat 'em up.

82 FINAL FIGHT 3 (Capcom, 1996)

I actaully thought this Final Fight game was fairly fun to play because of all the new special moves and non linear gameplay this time around. The idea is the same where Metro City gets a gang problem and the Mayor actually beats up the criminals himself and you can pick from 3 other characters as well. This is the best of the series in my opinion although the game was a bit on the easy side here.

59 FIREPOWER 2000 (Sunsoft, 1992)
Some people actually like this fast paced shooter here but I didn't go for the rather generic enemies, repetitive action, and absolute lousy music myself. I also didn't think it was cool to drive around in a limited jeep especially when one of you is forced to pick it in the two player mode.

58 FROGGER (Majesto/Konami, 1998)

This is a graphically improved version of the legendary road crossing arcade game from the 1980's where you move around a little frog down busy streets and dangerous swamps. It's still fun arcade action but there is none of that cool retro background music here for some reason. This was the final Super Nintendo game by the way so you SNES collectors may want to take notice.

72 F-ZERO (Nintendo, September 1991)

One of Nintendo's premier Super Nintendo games is a great, and really fast paced 4 meg racer that uses that then new SNES mode 7 3D technology really well. The game may be insanely fast and it's always fun ramming into other drivers here but the racing itself is nothing too special and this is one player only title too.

GRADIUS III (Konami, September 1991)

Gradius III is a near direct port of the extremely difficult arcade shooter from 1989. This game was one of Konami's first Super Nintendo games and it's still one of their best to. This game can also be found on the PS2 but the game two games are actually quite different areas like the PS2 version is missing some the weapons in the Edit mode like the Mega Crush, R. Options, and the usefull Twin Back missiles and some of those levels have been edited exclusively for the SNES as well to address some of the complanits of the arcade game. Gradius III is easily one of the most fully loaded shooters ever made with 11 exciting levels and over 50 different weapons and power ups here. You get decent graphics, and awesome soundtracks and I'm sure this is going cheap for about 5 to 10 bucks.

63 GOOF TROOP (Capcom, 1992)

This game here is a very weird Legend of Zelda rip-off that could have been great two player game. In this adventure title Goofy and his son Max are on vacation on a remote island when they suddenly gets attacked and now have to find a way off. Sadly the action here is good and all but it's over too quickly because there are only has 5 levels and then it's all done for. Goof Troop is still a decent game if you can find it at a good price at least.

60 GUNFORCE (Irem, 1992)
Now here was a game I thought I would really like. Run and gun two player action with two heavily armoured dudes shooting anything that moves. Sadly this title is a slow moving Contra-like game that moves at a snail's pace even when it's just one person playing. The soldiers you play as can steal some of their enemy's vehicles for additional fire power which is cool so if you mastered Contra 3 then maybe you would like to move on to this shooter even if it isn't nearly as good.

70 HAGANE (Hudson Soft, 1996)

Hagane here is a cool robotic ninja and his game actually made it to the Canadian markets here despite how crappy the Snes was doing in 1996. 56 HOME IMPROVEMENT (Absolute, 1993)
Here is one of those games that you can't believe even existed. Home Improvement is a hard to control platform game starring none other than Tim 'the tool man' Taylor from that over rated TV show from a few years ago. The boring level design and terrible in-game music is what needed the most improvement but still I played worst and some of the different tools like Nail Gun and Jackhammer were fun to use.

65 ININDO (Koei, 1993)

Here Koei tries a traditional overhead role playing game instead of their usual text/turn based strategy game they are famous for. OK, it sure doesn't look or sound so good by Snes standards but it's still very fun to play and it's bound to impress hardcore RPG fans looking for underrated titles.

59 ILLUSION of GAIA (Nintendo/Enix, 1993)
This is a surprisingly weak sequel to the original Soul Blazer. In it you play the role of a young student with the strange power to move objects from a distance and he can also get help from a mysterious warrior. The thing that bothered me about the game was the heavy focus on the story instead of the action itself and the bland graphics and sounds didn't wow me either. Avoid this lesser action/RPG because there is barely anything here that is even remotely as good as other more popular Role Playing Games like Chrono Trigger.

66 INSPECTOR GADGET (Hudson Soft, 1994)

In this rather average video game you play as a semi-retarded detective with the ability to use several robotic limbs and other gimzos in order to save his neice. If you are a fan of the old cartoon show you can actually see Dr. Claw's face if you can manage to make it to the end. Although Gadget can do a lot tricks, the game quickly gets tedious when you have to switch around the different moves and gadgets just to get where you're going. Good but not great.

42 JIM POWER
The very weird looking action game that tried to impress us with its exclusive 3D visuals but most people avoided it because Jim Power comes with a unfair difficulty. The name may sound like a gay couple that people wrisper about but in this arcade-like game you can control one of two goofy cavemen that can find cool weapons, fight dangerous dinosaurs, and save good looking babes in this cute action title. 69 JURASSIC PARK (Ocean, 1992)
This popular 90's movie turned game here has a good mixture of both 3D Doom-like level and overhead action rolled into one. If you don't know the story dinosaurs have been re-animated in placed on a remote island called Jurassic Park. The problem is the dinos are no longer under control and you are forced to fight your way through hordes of both big and small rapid man eating killers. The 3D levels are choppy and the view isn't full screen either but it helps break up the action if you get sick of the overhead action. I would have rated this even higher if the ending for this wasn't so bad and if there was more of story here as well.

KILLER INSTINCT (Nintendo/Rare, 1995)
This is easily the best looking fighting game on the SNES but it still pales in comparison to the liquid smooth arcade title of course. It's Puyo Puyo on the Super Nintendo but now the characters are all from the Kirby universe. The game is simply; just match up coloured blobs to make them disappear for points and combos plus you can also F up your opponents side if you do well enough. Kirby's Dreamland 3 plays a lot like Kirby 64 but here you can get help from 6 animal friends plus you can also play with a second player as well which is rare for a Kirby action game. The game even has some decent visuals thanks to the cartoonish style artwork and there are even some cameos from other Nintendo characters here like Samus and Professor Hector. Kirby's Dreamland 3 isn't anything too new but the game is still fun enough not to be lame.

In this unique title you play as a geeky young man that has to survive the many dangers of a remote island. The game has a few cool ideas like seeing this character became more brave as the goes on but the adventure builts very slowly and the unforgiving nature of the game play demands a lot of trial and error plus there is no save option here either. The game looks and sounds great just the animated Disney movie. In the game you play as a young lion that witnesses the death of his father and is forced into exile. When he grows up he returns to his community to get revenge and become king. Sadly the game play is very limited to just basic hopping and avoiding so expert players may want to stay away from this. That's not to say the game isn't difficult because there are still plenty of hard and out right frustating jumps in here. Lion King is a good kid's game but don't expect too much action overall.

Like before this is a turn based role playing game where you guide a group of young heroes on a mission to destroy the evil Sinistals. The graphics and sounds are not as very impressive though especially compared to other 16-bit RPG's out at the time like Phantasy Star IV or Chrono Trigger but it gets the job done. 70 MEGA MAN 7 (Capcom, 1995)
Now this is weird. This Mega Man game was actually released after Mega Man X so this game plays more like the classic NES titles. Mega Man has to worry about Dr. Wily's sinister new plan after his escape from prison (that was after the events in part 6 of course) plus there is a new enemy/friend named Bass that is added to the story lines too. Capcom knew the Mega Man series was still popular in the 1990's but they also knew the franchise was losing a lot stream after all the crappy NES sequels Mega Man 4, 5, and 6. If their were going to release a new Mega Man game for the Snes they knew it had to be something special. Enter Mega Man X: the Mega Man of the future! Now it's his mission to destroy rioting robots before they manage to wipe out the entire human race. OK, you still have to fight 8 guardian bosses just like in other MM game but now they are animal robots (big freakin' deal!). The new Mega Man here can now climb walls, earn new weapons or upgrades, and he can even collect new pieces of armour. Although all the shooting action here is fairly intense, the game is definitely on the short side with only 13 levels and these graphics are pretty plain for a Snes title. Mega Man X is still a great non linear game.

78 MEGA MAN X2 (Capcom, 1994)

Mega Man X is back in action after enough people brought the last game but story wise there are still a lot of evil robotic mavericks after the fall of Sigma. This sequel features a special 3D graphics chip for limited vector graphics and some new enemies but if you blink then you miss these bonus features while going through this typical mission to destroy 8 more robots yet again. It's still too similar to the last game and guess who the last boss is here, eh?

70 MEGA MAN X3 (Capcom, 1996)
This sequel now lets you play as Mega Man's sword weilding panther Zero for the first time but he only has one life and he can't collect any weapons either so he doesn't really do much. You are still playing the role of Mega Man X here and he must now fight a new mastermind behind a new robot rebellion. You know the deal: kill 8 bosses, get their weapons, fight Sigma and that's pretty much it here. Mega Man X3 also features some new pre-rendered graphics during the intermissions plus it also has some minimal 3D vector animation from part II but most of the game still looks rather bland overall much like the two prequels. It's still another Mega Man X action game plain and simple so it was still fun.

70 METAL COMBAT (Nintendo, 1993)

*Super scope required
This is the sequel to the very unpopular light gun only game Battle Clash if you care. Now to be fair Metal Combat is easily the best Super Scope game with loads of enemies to fight and there are also a lot weapons to use as well but unless you really liked the original and you actually have this cheap plastic bazooka around the house I say pass.

78 MICHAEL JORDAN: Chaos in the Windy City (EA, 1993)

Sure, this may seem like a horrible idea for a video game. Basketball legend Michael Jordan is fighting zombies, bugs, and other weirdo's in hidden underground hideouts to find a strange evil dude with a big head who hates basketball? Despite the weird, drugged up idea I love the whole look of this unique platformer where you toss different balls to save your missing team mates. Since the idea is so out there for one of the top basketball players of all time I don't think everyone will get it but still Michael Jordan: CITWC is a very funny and challenging game that I recommend for action fans.

58 MICRO MACHINES (Codemasters, 1994)

The fun and fast paced overhead racer that became a cult favourite on the NES also comes to the SNES as well. If you don't know what this game about then you get the chance to race across coffee tables and tile floors with this licensed toy cars at insane speeds. Sadly the game actually isn't too different compare to the older NES game.

70 MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RANGERS (Bandai, 1994)

Anybody remember these Mighty Morphing Power Rangers? Are they still around I guess and is that one guy out of rehab yet? There first SNES game is a super easy action game about those 5 original kids with special alien super powers that are trying to stop a evil queen and her monsters from conquering earth. Sadly, the whole game only comes with short 7 levels and the final two levels are just a couple of weak one on one boss battles. The Power Rangers is a good game I guess thanks to some solid controls but only Power Rangers freaks should consider getting this.

37 MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RANGERS: The Fighting Edition (Bandai, 1995)

This has to be one the weakest and most basic fighting games ever made with some of the lamest characters to appeal on a video game. That women with the lipstick head looks terrible! This fighting game is way too average to be in the same league as other fighting games like Street Fighter II.

72 MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RANGERS: The Movie (Bandai, 1995)

Here is the best Power Ranger game out there in my opinion thanks to its good overall action, good use of power ups, and solid presentation. Now you must help a team of six rangers across eight levels until you finally make it to the final battle with Ivan Ooze. Power Rangers is your standard 2D action game but the two player support and good amount of enemies help it from sucking.

52 MORTAL KOMBAT (Acclaim, September 1993)

This version of the insanely popular arcade is famous (for all the wrong reasons) for it's heavily censored content. Mortal Kombat for the Super Nintendo had the gory red blood turned gray, the glitches are much more apparent, and some of the more violent finishing moves were altered to look less disturbing. It is still the same old one on one fighting game with stunning digital life like art and realistic sounds but the game play itself didn't translate so well. Even fighting in the Pit level is no fun now since everything looks so clean and pretty instead of bloody and grim. BOO!

MORTAL KOMBAT II (Acclaim, October 1994)

Perhaps one of the grestest home translation of any Mortal Kombat game ever. This even comes complete with all blood this time unlike the first SNES Mortal Kombat disaster. Part II comes with new fighters, new moves, and all new fatalities of course as you fight in the Outworld tournament in hopes of facing Sho Khan to save the earth from being taking over. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sub Zero, Scorpion, and Raiden make their return to the big sequel but you also get Jax, Katana, Kung Lao, Mellina, and the now playable Shung Tsung, and Reptile to round up a total of 12 fighters. Mortal Kombat II isn't too original as fighting games go but the game play is as fast and intense of ever.

63 MORTAL KOMBAT 3 (Williams, October 15, 1995)
Despite all of the hype surrounding this one on one title I didn't like this sequel all too much. Some of the new characters look too goofy to be part of a life or death tournament to save the earth for one thing and compared to other fighters of the day like Virtua Fighter and Killer Instinct, MK3 is just sad. Also the game's difficulty can either be too easy or too hard no matter what you set it at in the options menu.

70 MR. NUTZ (Ocean, 1992)
Before Conker's Bad Fur Day there was Mr. Nutz here in this rather simple action platformer where you control a cute rodent that throws nuts and has a big tail. This is a good action side scroller with lust colourful graphics and challenging game play so if you can find it the game may surprise you. Sadly, there is no password or save option so you better have a few hours free if you want to finish the whole thing.

GAME OF THE MONTH COLLECTION!

75 MS. PAC MAN (Williams/Namco, 1996)

Ms. Pac Man is still a great timeless classic and it comes back with many new bonus maze types like Mini, Strange, and Big which were a part of the Nes and Genesis Tengen releases but not in original old maze arcade game of course. You know the deal: collect dots, avoid ghosts; all that good stuff. The only thing really missing is that it needs a save feature so I can keep a record of my high scores but the game is still fun.

89 MYSTICAL NINJA (Konami, 1991)
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja is an awesome 8 meg, two player adventure starring two wacky ninjas trying to rescue a princess. Although it sounds weird at first, this is a great game that has tons of bonus side games like a quiz show, mini arcades and you can even bet on horse racing events. This is a 'Goeman' game for the Japanese gamers out there.
