Down and Dirty Reviews: Xbox 360 -- A - Z

Here is the X Box 360! Like the original Xbox this system is great for more mature gamers as a lot of the more popular titles are custom made for adults. If you like Racing and First Person Shooters then you'll love the 360. Here are the games I had a chance to play so far.

The scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sounds, and game play are out of 10.

Score / Name
87 BIOSHOCK (2K Games, July 2007)
OK, the story is pretty crazy but it's very original too plus the game is constantly throwing new weapons, mini games, and leaving you clues so it drives you to continue playing till you learn every dirty little secret. Bioshock maybe one of those type of game you never heard of before (one of my friends didn't even know about it and he has a 360 too) but doesn't stop it from being one of the best looking and most action packed titles for the system so far. The game is a breath of fresh air for the tired FPS scene and I'm also hoping this wasn't based on a real story or we are in a lot of trouble!

02 BOMBERMAN Act Zero (Konami/Hudson Soft, 2006)
The new 3D view of the popular bombing action hurts more then it helps. Before the camera would be placed high enough so you can see the entire map and all the players. Now can control the camera so you can zoom in on the bomberman but why would anyone want to if it just makes things harder to see? You can still play in the original overhead perspective mode but you don't get to use the life bar so it like the game is punishing the player who likes it the classic way. There is some background music but it sucks too especially for a 360 title. Hudson has some nerve releasing this unpolished piece of $h*^ at the full price of 60 bucks when the original Turbografx-16 and Super Nintendo games totally own this! The game has a few good ideas but they were all poorly executed. The single player is pointless, multi-player is online only, the 3D view is awkward at best, and the game just isn't fun to play period.

83 BURNOUT REVENGE (EA Games/Criterion Games, March 7, 2006)
This great edition of this super fast arcade racing series is not only the same crazy and fast game that won rave reviews on the Playstation2 and original Xbox but it also gets a slight face lift here. In the game you still compete in various crazy racing challenges and get rewarded for driving like a total nut case (like driving on the wrong side of the road, near misses, and drifts) with nitro boosts just like in the last Burnout's. The big difference now is a lot of cars on the road have less weight to them compared to Burnout 3 and they can now be used as better projectile weapons especially against your special rival vehicles. Other improvements to the game includes a play back and record feature so you can show your best crashes over Xbox Live and the graphics look even better so you can see further into the background even at the game's insane speeds. Burnout Revenge 360 also took out that annoying start up meter before a Crash Race (a fun mode where you try to cause one big multi-car pile up) so you can get right to the action instead. Burnout Revenge isn't the huge leap over the PS2 and Xbox editions that came out 6 months before this one but it's still one of the best and most intense racing games you can ever play so if you never tried the others this is a great palce to start.

DEAD RISING (Capcom, 2006)
Capcom really loves this zombie thing, eh? Of course if you got a good thing going then why not do more and fighting the undead on the Xbox 360 works here too. In Dead Rising you play a free lance newsman on a mission to get the big story on a small city in America that's on lock down after a huge disaster. With only a camera you are dropped into the local mall to investigate just what happened but your mission to get the story quickly turns into a quest to stay alive has thousands of rampaging zombies are ready to kill anything that has a pulse. So do you try to rescue as many survivors as you can to earn the trust of the locals or do just try to get as many pictures as possible and wait out the 72 hours to escape? The game not only has cool graphics since the screen can have hundreds of zombies at once but the game is really fun since you can use almost as a weapon like swords, guns, soccer balls, cars, and lots more. Remember that you still have to take pictures for points so it isn't all about decapitating anything that moves. Unfortunately, there are a lot of other innocent people in the Mall too and they are not too bright and aiming the guns doesn't control as well as Resident Evil 4 so the game isn't perfect. Despite that Dead Rising is a great action game with an interesting story.

71 DEAD or ALIVE 4 (Tecmo/Team Ninja, December 30, 2005)

The popular Dead or Alive returns and this version has a lot new features to help mask that it's still just the same old one on one fighting we been playing for years. DOA4 not only has a lot of the older characters make their return like Kasumi, Zack and more but there is a great list of new comers like Kokoro (karate), La Mariposa (Mexican wrestling), Ellot (pray mantis kung fu) and you can even play as a special female Spartan character from the Halo series. The new interactive backgrounds are even more detailed and bigger then ever before and the game comes with a nice list of unlockables (like more revealing costumes) too. Unfortunately, I started to get bored in the single player game and the end boss is so cheap and unfair it really makes everything feel unbalanced. Even though the game looks amazing especailly with the hot girls but it really doesn't look that improved over the past editions. Dead or Alive 4 is still a lot of fun especially for two players looking to get out some aggression.

75 DOUBLE DRAGON NEON (Wayforward, 2012)
*Xbox Live Arcade 800 points
They're back! Oh yeah, like the original arcade and console classics Billy and or Jimmy Lee go a dangerous rescue mission to save Marion from a mysterious gang. Strangely enough the game really has a unique 1980's look with mix tape power ups, cheesy pop music, and of course 80's fashion (I see mullets). This isn't a complete remake either cause there are all new locals introduced here like shops, graveyards and even deep space. I liked the new techniques the brothers can learn and there are tons of cool co-op features to make this awesome to play with a friend but I don't like how the game uses so many buttons to run, punch, kick, jump, use magic, duck, roll, and grab. Because of this I still
prefer the original two arcade and DD Advance games to this one but that doesn't mean I didn't have a blast here.

FUSION FRENZY 2 (Microsoft/Hudson, 2006)
Although the first Fusion Frenzy wasn't anything too special, it did have some charm and the simple mini games in a futurist setting was kinda interesting. I guess someone wanted a sequel because we got one here for the Xbox 360.........nice going. Fusion Frenzy 2 still lets you and your friends compete in about 40 different goofy events to see who can get the most points at the end. The problem is the game is loaded with a boring list of customizable options that can take forever to set up, there is this annoying card system here that slows down things ever further but the worst part by far is this highly annoying announcer that talks all the time. Yeah, it's fun to laugh at but it will still kill your party.

88 GEARS of WAR (Epic Games, November, 2006)
Although Gears of War appears to be a lot like hundreds of other dire survival/shooting games in a war tored environment we all seen before, the game does several awesome things to separate it from the pack. First things first: this is a third person shooter where you control the gritty anti-hero Marcus Phoenix (or the second player plays his friend Dom) and if you want live in this intense action game you have to take cover and shoot at the right time or you're dead meat. Using this stop and pop technique really helps the game feel unique and you get a great list of weapons to try here too. Another thing cool about the game is the stunning/nearly lifelike graphics and realistic sound effects that are easily some of the best I ever seen in a video game. It's a shame the multi-player can only be played with up to 8 players but the fighting is always chaotic and very brutal. Remember this game is rated M for a reason because of the tons of blood and decapitations here. The action cover based game play can get repetitive and sometimes I can't always tell if I'm shooting a teammate or a enemy since everything looks so gray but those are just minor complaints to the incredible Gears of War.

GEARS of WAR 2 (Epic Games, 2008)
Here is the big sequel to one of the Xbox 360's most famous titles and let's see what they can do here. The game still remains mostly the same as the previous heroes Marcus Phoenix and Dom continue their hunt to destroy vicious creatures hell bend on revenge and rebuilding their empire. You still have the cool guns with chainsaws as before but now there are just more weapons like the flame throwers and there are more vehicles scenes in here as well. The new intense Horde mode also amps up the multi-player action and it makes this sequel even better then awesome original.

GUITAR HERO II (Activision, 2006)
You'll find tracks from Aerosmith, Guns 'N Roses, Kiss, Police, the Rolling Stones, and many more all here. A lot of the music isn't done by the original artist just warn ya ahead of time but they still sound damn fine. Yeah, the game isn't too different from the PS2 edition but who the hell cares because GH2 still rocks on the 360. You get some graphical plastic surgery, a few extra tracks, and even some online fighting on leaderboards. It's time to stop scratching your rash and forget the grass, get up off that a$$ and rock on to Guitar Hero 2!

OK, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a great sequel to the originals thanks to all the challenging new songs and different boss battles but ever since Rock Band came out in the same year (2007) it kind of feels like you're missing something here. Still if you could gives a rat's a$% about singing or doing the drums then its time to pick up that axe with the candy-like buttons on it and tell Satan that he's not going to out rock you tonite!

Another year, another Guitar Hero. Now you can sing and play the drums much like in Rock Band so it's just not guitar playing this time around and there is a edit mode as well so it's possible to mess around with the notes a bit to create something different. Of course there is a bunch of new tracks too like Michael Jackson's 'Beat it', The Eagles 'Hotel Calfornia' and much more. Still not much has changed overall.

GRAND THEFT AUTO IV (Rockstar Games, April 29, 2008)
Not only do you have a huge unlinear single game with tons of side missions and mini games to try out but you even get a new multi-player pack in here too with a great selection of death matches and team games where you can even be cops trying to take down crooks. The constant cell phone calls can get a little annoying but the bottom line is Grand Theft Auto IV is absolutely loaded with so much damn content that you feel like a thief since you only paid 60 or so bucks to get such a huge title!

95 GRAND THEFT AUTO V (Rockstar Games, 2013)
Ohya, it's back and before the next generation cycle hits for the Xbox and Playstation we managed to get a new GTA. Like in previous editions you get to steal any vehicle around in order to complete several different missions like heists, drive bys, and more to earn cash across many familiar locations from San Andreas but now instead of focusing on a single character there are now three central playable anti-heroes Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Franklin and Michael story lines are pretty straightforward since they see the criminal life as a necessary evil but Trevor on the other hand is just a crazy nut job and it's not uncommon to see this guy yelling up a storm or just semi-nude. So if you wanna see some middle aged male a$$ here's your chance I guess. The game is still huge in scope, the story is compelling, and there are less breaks in the action compared to part IV. Although it's yet another GTA, it's still another great one.

90 HALO 3 (Mircosoft/Bungie, September 23, 2007)
OK, all the game's hype was a bit too much (there is a Halo 3 Mountain Dew drink out there for one) and the end result may leave some hard-core players upset with the lack of changes. Halo 3 doesn't redefine the First Person Shooter and the story mode is a bit too short like in Halo 2 but it doesn't stop me from playing it constantly and risk getting fired. There is even a cool new score system in the story mode here. Overall the game is easily another 5 star product and is packed with enough new goodies like the bubble shield, bigass weapons like flame throwers, secrets, and modes making it addictive as hell.

59 HALO ODST (Microsoft, 2009)

Wooooooo it's another Halo game, this is going to rock, right!? Well, that's what I thought at first because this game lets you play as a standard marine instead of typical Halo hero Master Chief. I figure this would be a good way to learn more about the story since Master Chief is a bada$% but there isn't much known about this super human guy, so maybe we could relate better with this new hero, eh? Sadly there isn't really much of a game here since the campaign is just a mere 3 to 5 hours long and the new feature here is that it plays more like Halo 1 since your hero doesn't have regenerating health.....OK? Even the multi-player is pretty much the same as Halo 3 but now it's on a separate disc... lame. Maybe I would have liked this better if it was a budget title but no such luck.

70 HALO WARS (Microsoft, 2008)

Nice, a real time strategy game in the Halo universe. Instead of the standard first person shooter we played a million times before you get a unique overhead prespective of the different warzones aplus you can control of multiple infantry and vehicles at the same time. The odd controls take some getting use to and can be awkward in the heat of battle and the graphics are nothing too special but the game has a cool story and lots of missions.

INSANITY X (Aetherbyte Studios, 2011)
*Indie game 80 points
OK, I might have a little bias towards to one here but this is a cool story. After reviewing the original Insanity which Turbografx-16 fans may remember, I actually talked with the programmer of this game and we worked out a deal where I give him some artwork and he game me another copy of the game. Little did I know he was working on translating the game to the Xbox 360 and PC as well and that artwork you see on the cover page is my stuff, baby! Ohya my dream come true, my work is in an actual video game YEAH! Well anyway enough of my ego trip, back to the review. Like the original this game is a Berzerk-esque type shooter from the 1980's and you are a lone human fighting for survival against a horde of killer robots. The robots are pretty dumb since they'll shoot follow robots and walk into walls but they're everywhere too and can fire lasers at will. If that wasn't bad enough if you take too long an invincible droid will run you down. Fortunately one of the nice new improvements to the game play is that your hero moves a lot faster so it's easier to dodge enemies and shots now and you even have a little bit of invinciblity at the start of each level making the game much more balanced. The backgrounds are also a bit darker so it's easier to see the lasers and the game also comes with improved title and ending artwork (nope, not mine heh heh) but everything else looks the same as the TG-16 original and that may disappoint some 360 owners. Sadly there is no leaderboards or save option here but at a mere 80 point (a buck) it's hard to give this intense title a hard time especially since there is currently no Berzerk arcade on Xbox Live at the moment.

53 JUICE 2 (THQ, 2009)

Remember the driving game where you can race fancy souped up rides and even place bets to earn big cash? Well, there's a sequel here and .... yeah... that's pretty much it because it's the same game as before but now the visuals look slightly better (although they better be). Juice 2 lets you customize cars and compete in various races but the game gets fairly easy and even boring since there isn't much new here. This Juice is empty!

72 KAMEO: Elements of Power (Rare, November 2005)
It took forever for this game here to come out but after years of waiting and two consoles later here is Kameo: Elements of Power. In this 3D action/adventure fantasy game you control a rather hot looking native girl that can transform into several different creatures like a plant that's good at punching to a giant ape that can throw ice. So was it worth the long wait though? Although the game gets off to slow start early on and switching between 10 different characters all the time can get annoying, the adventure quickly gets more compelling with lots cool looking environments with puzzles and other secrets to find. The game is not only packed with some stunning visuals and amazing music but the controls are very user friendly as well. It may look weird but Kameo is a very good adventure title.

67 KANE & LYNCH: Deadman (Eidos, 2007)

There was a lot of hype surrounding this game since it's suppose to have this well written and gritty story line where you get to play as two men on deathrow that escape from prison only to be locked into forced to do a heist to save Kane's kidnapped family. The game has a lot of cool gun fights and having a partner throughout the game can really save your life if your about to die but the cover system is a bit iffy and these visuals are honestly not too impressive for a 360 title. Kane & Lynch also has a interesting multi-player mode that either let's you work together or turn on your friends to claim more gold for yourself which is fun for a few tries. In the end though Kane & Lynch lacks polish compared to something like Grand Theft Auto 4.

LOST (2008)
Yup, the 'game' is actually based on that strange TV show where a bunch of survivors of a plane crash are trying to co-exist on a island. There isn't much to do here except to do a bunch of mini games while you jump from multiple uninteresting story lines until you complete the game or get totally confused by the constant flashbacks and shut it off. If that wasn't bad enough the characters all act like robots and there are invisable walls everywhere. Lost is pretty easy to find in the discount bins.

Since the NHL isn't on strike this year EA Sports is going all out with this edition of their famous Hockey series. Not only are the visuals beefed up from 08 thanks to the fancy new presentation but there are new modes as well like the 'Be a Pro' option so you can live the life of an up and coming NHL player. 67 PERFECT DARK ZERO (Rare, November 2005)

After years of waiting we finally get another Perfect Dark game but here on the 360 now. You would think that now it's on a advance machine like this and not some old Nintendo 64 it would be a lot better but this first person shooter has it share of flaws. Like before you play as Joanne Dark on a mission to gun down some dudes at Data Dyne that seem to be hiding aliens. The game switches perspectives when you take cover and that's cool but other then that there are not too many new features and PDZ has plenty of annoying glitches as well like floating bodies. Perfect Dark Zero should have been a lot better.

44 RIDGE RACER 6 (Namco, November 2005)
Ridge Racer 6 was the first ever Xbox 360 game I ever played and it is one of the reasons why I had my doubts about the system. Is it really that bad; yes, yes it is. The game started off pretty good with a playable Pac Man loading screen and then the actual real game opens with a decent CG intro. All that is nice but all the game play involves is just trying to come in first place using your drifting and nitrous boosts and that's pretty much it. There are a lot stages and branching paths but a lot areas look the same and the graphics aren't even that impressive for a 360 title. There is no model damage for the cars, ramming into walls looks very unrealistic (especially with all the invisible walls), and even the basic two player mode sucks since it is just you and your opponent and the computer controlled cars are no where to be found. The music isn't too bad but that announcer guy is highly annoying with a lot of lame one liners. If all that wasn't enough the game even has a lot of loading screens so it maybe a good idea to have something else to do on the side or even better just play something else entirely. Sadly, as driving games go I been down this road too many times before.

First off this game originally came with a big box and four unique controllers so you and your friends only have a few coloured buttons to work with. STREET FIGHTER IV (Capcom, February 2009)
Although I was getting pretty sick of all the Street Fighter II upgrades out there, it's cool to see Street Fighter return with a few cool enhancements. Part IV here has all the original 12 fighters from Street Fighter II like Guile, Honda, Balrog for example but there four new comers too like Abel, C. Viper, and more. The graphics are completely 3D but the game play is still the same where you beat up competitors one on one so that's all good. The goal is the same to become the best but now the Shadowloo empire has fallen and there is a new threat from a powerful fighter called Seth. There are new focus and revenge attacks to master so Street Fighter 4 not only looks and sounds awesome but the game play is pretty deep too.

Get ready for the first of many expansion paks for Street Fighter 4 (it sounds like I'm joking but sadly it's true). It's pretty much the same game with all the characters from part 4 returning but now the secret characters are fully selectable from the start, there are a few returning characters like Dudley, Cody, and Ibuki plus there are two exclusive new fighters; a Korean Tae Kwon Do chick and a Turkish wrestler who oils his body for an advantage. It's fun to see a girl like Cammy get oiled up. Anyway, seeing the new characters are cool I guess but the improvements are just not strong enough to justify a new release like this.

Holy crap, they are at part 6 already? Guess so. Well, the game play in pretty much the same as the other Tekken's fighting games where you beat up opponents to advance in a tournament and most of the popular characters from the past titles return like Jin, Nina, Paul, Kazuya, King and more but now they are joined by new comers like a big fat American dude, and even a weird young girl robot with chainsaws. It really more of the same though and the new story mode where you beat up a bunch of underpaid goons is pretty repetitive and just plain boring. UFC UNDISPUTED 2009 (THQ, 2009)
It's been awhile but the UFC finally returns to the gaming scene. You know the deal, two fighters enter a octogon shaped cage and duke it out in any fighting style they see fit and this game has tons of big names too like Brock Lesner, George Rush St. Pierre, Forest Griffon, BJ Penn and about 80 others in 5 different weight classes. The presentation looks amazing with the classic UFC introductions and all the fighters themselves are well detailed too, but the animation looks a bit stiff in spots and the two man commentary and limited play modes start to wear thin after only a few tries. Still the controls are excellent here for either a stand up war or working on the ground game so this game is a must if you are a fan of the sport.

68 WWE SMACKDOWN vs. RAW 2007 (THQ/Yukes, 2006)

The popular Playstation2 series arrives to an Xbox console for the first time and it looks amazing. Just like 2006 edition you get a lot of modes like Career, Manager, Create-a-wrestler, and many mode options but now you get to see the cool new graphics so you can see the sweet on the fighters and overall better detail. All that is great but the wrestlers can be very slow to get up after getting knocked down and have a stamina bar to maintain too so the action does feel as intense as past Smackdown titles. Also the story mode has some weird twists where men can get turned into women through magic and then be hit on by the 500 pound Viscera. Wrestling fans will be pleased with this game thanks to all the content but I wish it was faster and easier to control.

67 WWE SMACKDOWN vs. RAW 2008 (THQ/Yukes, 2007)

This series just keeps on going no matter how minimal the improvements. The big deal here is the wrestlers have eight different fighting style like Dirty, Submission, Brawler, High Flyer, and more. It was a cool idea but it all feels unbalanced when the best one is Powerhouse. If you are a Powerhouse wrestlers can over power opponents and even be invincible for a short amount of time. Another new edition is some ECW content like hardcore matches where you can do crazy crap like light bat's that at covered in barbwire on fire. Other then that though it still feels like the same old game with slow character movements, the announcers sound terrible (is that really JBL's voice?), the game has the occasional freeze, and even the roster is horribly out dated (guys like Cryme Time, Sandman, Sabu are still here despite being fired months ago when it was released). Wrestling fans may still like it but be warned there isn't a lot new here.
