Down and Dirty Reviews: Snes -- A - E

Nintendo says that this system is still alive, but we haven't seen a new game since Frogger in 1998.  Oh well, there's still a huge collection of SNES games here and a lot of goods ones too. Choose wisely now.

A to E

The overall scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sounds, and gameplay are out of 10.

Score / Name
70 7th SAGA (Enix, 1992)
In this unique game you select from 7 different warriors in a difficult mission to protect your kingdom. 7th Saga also comes with some good looking graphics especially in the 3D mode7 battles with the game's different enemies. 7th Saga isn't too revolutionary but it should please RPG fans who don't mind doing a lot of grinding.

90 ACTRAISER (Enix, 1991)
This great 8 meg game here is not only a decent little platform game with good old hack n' slash action but it's also a great simulation game as well. In the game you guide a fallen spiritual warrior or a god through 12 side scrolling levels of various monsters and then try to restore the towns they have destroyed. Actraiser may have impressive graphics and excellent music but the only downside to the game kind of short. It was still very fun to rebuild this world here.

62 ACTRAISER 2 (Enix, 1993)

What should have been a great game since this is a follow up to one of the better launch titles for the Snes is nothing more then a very hard to control all action sequel starring a new but much slower winged warrior. It should also be mentioned that those fun create a town modes are now completely gone from the original too so the focus on the action was nice idea but overall it just didn't work out in the end. Actraiser 2 is playable but it's still a huge disappointment.

21 AEROBIZ (Koei, 1993)
What can be more fun than running your own airline? "I got an idea, ANYTHING!" Maybe Koei should stick with more historical lore and epic battles instead of worrying about how someone would run some stupid airport. Maybe if you are into this sort of thing then it might be worth a look but I could care less.

46 AERO The ACROBAT (Sunsoft, 1994)

Here is yet another cheap and rather average action platformer starring some stupid looking circus bat that Sunsoft was marketing as their mascot. Not only is Aero the Acrobat a lame hero but it's way too hard for its own good and it's not recommend for the casual gamer thanks to the awkward controls. Despite some cool ideas, there is no real fun here.

76 ALADDIN (Capcom, 1993)

This edition is different then the Sega Genesis game but it's not really better. In this 2D platformer you control a young thief trying to find a magic lamp and stop the evil Jaffar from taking over the kingdom. Because of the very easy difficulty and slightly duller graphics here the game loses a few points. Makes a good rental though if your store is stupid enough to even rent out Super Nintendo games anymore.

79 ALIEN 3 (Ljn, 1993)
This is sure one awesome looking 16 meg action platformer game here with tons of levels with several different objectives to master. In the game you control a bald women looking to stop an alien investion at a prison colony. One thing that really stands out here is the game's stunning life-like graphics with great lighting effects and realistic sound effects are also pretty dam good as well. The controls can be a little slow to react to my commands at times but overall Alien 3 for the SNES is just another video game that's better than the movie.

51 AN AMERICAN TAIL: Fievel Goes West (Hudson Soft, 1995)
In this cartoon licensed game here you help this young rat shoot out the evil cats out of town in this very average platformer. Other than some nice graphics and some decent controls Fievel Goes West has nothing really special about it but maybe younger kids will like it if they are already bored with playing better games like Super Mario World and Actraiser too death?

80 ARCADE'S GREATEST HITS: Atari Edition (Midway/Atari, 1996)
This awesome cart includes the original Tempest, Battle Zone, Missile Command, Asteroids, Super Breakout, and Centipede; all these are classic Atari games from arcade's golden age all in one package. This is prefect for all the retro gamers out there who love classic arcade games from the early 1980's but I'm disappointed that you can't save your scores here.

65 ARCADE'S GREATEST HITS: Williams Edition (Midway, 1996)

The first edition of Midway's classic arcade collection from the early 80's includes the hit games Defender, Defender II, Joust, Robotron 2084, and Sinistar all in one. This is a nice collection of 5 games but why did Midway give the option to have up to 99 lives in most of the settings. Is this a Game Genie or a real game cartridge here?

66 ARKANOID Doh It Again (Nintendo/Taito, 1996)

The famous arcade classic makes a rare appearance a 16-bit console. Like the original game you guide a cylinder shaped spaceship on the bottom of the screen in order to volley a ball back and forth in order to destroy multi-coloured bricks on multiple play fields. There are several different power ups to find like Lasers, Multi-balls, Force Fields, and Longer Ships to help make this more indepth then your typical Breakout clone but there are also lots of enemies and even bosses to battle against here that get in the way but at least they are fun to fight. This version includes new features like 2 player co-op at the same time and a password option but other then that it play just like the other versions of Arkanoid and that means the graphics are pretty average plus most of the stages don't even have any background music. The game is still good ol' arcade action but you might be saying 'D'oh' if you expect a lot from this game.

54 ART of FIGHTING (SNK, November 1993)

This game is a total rip off of Capcom's Street Fighter II, the only real difference is that there are only two playable characters in the story mode plus there is only one real ending as well. Art of Fighting may have some new ideas like using spirit gauges that limits your special moves plus the game also tries to focus on a main story instead on separate quests but these features could also be seen as negatives to some people. The graphics and scratchy sounds are certainly down graded from the Neo Geo cousin but the game still has some of the zooming effects which is rare for a SNES fighter.

78 AXELAY (Konami, 1992)
In this cool shooter you must save your peaceful planet from powerful invading alien fleets, the only problem is your all alone on the quest for freedom. Axelay is not as fun or as deep as Konami's early SNES shooter Gradius III but it certainly looks a lot better in presentation. This game has amazing looking 3D and 2D effects and well designed art plus if that wasn't enough the music is also incredible. Sadly the game is a little on the short side with only 6 levels so the whole experience is a short one. If you love shooters though then this game is sure to please.

02 BARBIE Super Model (Hot B, 1992)
Yeah, they didn't even try here. In this so called game you guide this plastic Barbie girl to different modeling events where you get to pick out of outfits and pose for a bored crowd. Poor driving scenes, bad mini games, and poorly done graphics that insults girls instead of empowering them. There is nothing Super here!

48 BART'S NIGHTMARE (Acclaim, 1992)

I certainly liked the way this Simpsons game looks and sounds like since this looks a lot like the famous and long running TV show but the game play is very unremarkable. The main quest is to find missing pages of your homework before you wake up and this means there are a possible 8 scenernios to complete. The problem these mini quests in this title are way too hard especially late into the game. Despite the great idea, you should avoid this unfair game.

81 The Adventures of BATMAN and ROBIN (Konami, 1994)

This awesome looking platform game here is based on the hit cartoon show complete with all the famous super villains bosses like the Joker, Catwomen, Two Face, Poison Ivy, and lots more. Although the game may appear to be a simple beat up the bad guys sort of game here, it does come with good controls and a great list of weapons. Fans of the show will love this great game and action fans will like it too.

07 BATMAN FOREVER (Acclaim, 1995)
After Acclaim lost the Mortal Kombat license, they tried hard to get another big hit by making a game very similar to it. Enter Batman Forever, based on the hollywood blockbuster of the same name you play as either Batman and or Robin on a mission to end Two Face and The Riddler's control over Gotham City. At first glance the game looks amazing thanks to it's realistic animation and highly detailed computer generated visuals plus the music and sound effects are also impressive as well. Sadly the game falls apart when you start to control it because the Mortal Kombat style moveset just doesn't work for a action/adventure title like this and the whole game becomes a chore to play. Batman Forever is a solid gold turd.

77 BATMAN RETURNS (Konami, 1992)

It's Final Fight all over again but something's different this time! "Why is Cody now wearing a Batman costume?" Although this is one of the better Final Fight clones out there since your beating up tons of clowns and other weirdoes, it still suffers from cheap and unoriginal game play. Just try and fight Catwomen and not get hit here! The presentation is decent and controls are fine so it might be worth a look if the price is cheap.

*SuperScope required
Battle Clash is a short lived light gun mech shooter series with a mini anime-like story line as you battle giant robots one on one. This is better then most gun games because you can carry multiple weapons and the graphics are decent as well but that alone can't save the very limited game play here.

52 BATTLETOADS: BATTLEMANIACS (Tradewest/Rare, 1992)
The official sequel to the original Battletoads on NES and the Sega Genesis finally arrives on the Snes. Sure the game was a good beat em up and the graphics and sound weren't too bad either but it wasn't too innovative over the last title unfortunately and believe it or not but the game is even harder now too especially later in the game when almost everything kills you with one hit (actually there's a lot of things that will kill you instatly here so that's fun, eh?). If you hate overly difficult games I say pass.

63 BATTLETOADS/DOUBLE DRAGON The Ultimate Team (Tradewest, 1994)
The Battletoads and the Double Dragons team up to save what is left of their careers in this one game here. It didn't work by the way because this is a very safe fighter slash action title with some limited fighting techniques you seen years ago and cartoonist visuals that feel out of place for the Double Dragons. In fact this game plays more like Battletoads since it was made by Rareware (makers of Battletoads) and not Technos (makers of the Double Dragon). Still a decent guilty pleasure but I don't think these two will team up again in my life time.

01 BEBE'S KIDS (Motown Games, 1994)
............ Anybody remember this movie? If you thought LJN games were bad wait till you play this waste of circuits and plastic cause in this so called game you have the choice of two poorly drawn young kids and then you get to be little terrors in a amusement park. Before you get too excited this is a very poor man's beat 'em up slash action game where you try to move around these slow tiny punks as they try to fight robots, ghosts, security guards twice their size, and more junk that for whatever reason because they seem be in your way. I think that's the worst part of Bebe's Kids, there's no clear direction what your suppose to do in each stage. Why are these brats trying to break glass dropping from a shelf that a man is trying to catch? Why I am always losing time trying to find the exit in a giant haunted house? Why do pits take you further in the game and not kill you? This game is just a nightmare to power on start to finish and it's not even good for a laugh.

47 BEETHOVEN (Hot B, 1993)

Remember those movies about that giant St. Bernard dog? Well they made a game about it for some reason and the dog himself is on a rescue mission to find his lost puppies. Now I actually like the idea of controlling a dog in a video game simply for the fact it's something different. Beethoven can bark away enemies, shake away water on his body to put fires, and grab his pups to carry them to safety so it helps the game feel unique. What isn't so good however, the visuals are just boring set pieces and the often slippery controls cost me to fall off platforms especially later in the game where there are crazy jumps everywhere. Unless you really liked those movies, I say Old Yeller this dog.

Here is a good yet virtually unheard of shooter with a unique orb defense system that can either circle around you or be used as a weapon. 75 BLACKTHRONE (Interplay, 1993)
Remember the game Out of this World? This game plays a lot like that alien adventure but this is a far more gritty game as you fight to save your fantasy kingdom in a ruined universe with your trusty shot gun. Black Throne may seem like a typical action game and it's kinda short too but it's also fairly difficult and requires a lot strategy to make certain jumps or kill tougher guards. Blackthrone is a unique brend of fantasy and awesome modern day violence.

53 BLAZEON (Atlus, 1992)

The game's big selling point is that your ship can capture up to 7 different enemy crafts and each unit has different weapons which may or may not help you in some situations. Be careful, although Blazeon may not look like much, don't underestimate the game's challenging later levels which borderline on impossible. I still haven't been able to finish this one and I was able to complete R Type. Blazeon has a cool idea for a shooter but it's a little dull in some parts of the levels there is almost no action going on at all in certain places.

70 BOOGERMAN (Interplay, 1995)

Oh boy, like the name implies in this game you are a super hero that uses his own nose waste to attack enemies. I'm not making this up! This once Sega Genesis exclusive got ported over on the Snes and thankfully all the crude humour that game is known for is all here despite how censor happy Nintendo is. Sadly other then some audio improvements this action platformer is nearly identical so don't expect a new game. Still Boogerman is a well made title with good controls, decent visuals, and nice sound effects but the overly long levels to out wear their welcome so it's not perfect.

76 BREATH of FIRE (Square/Capcom, 1992)

In the game you help young man named Ryu so he can rescue his sister from a evil army and discover his inter dragonpower to save the world. Square would bring a Capcom RPG to Canada and the states but they would leave other great RPG's behind like Secret of Mana 2 in the land of the rising sun for some reason? Breath of Fire II is a pretty paint by the numbers RPG as you level up characters that are both human and or animal go on multiple quests to fight monsters but the story really drew me in this long adventure. So in this generic platformer you get to jump on mutant snacks and that doesn't seem too bad but all the while you are trying to maintain your blood sugar levels here in one of the lamest video games ever created. The popular Contra shooting series returns to the video game scene but now it debuts on a 16-bit system for the first time. There are only 6 levels instead of the usual 8 in the NES games but it's still an action packed shooter featuring new weapons, different techniques, and even more aggressive enemies. There is nothing too ground breaking here and yes only one hit will still kill you like before so casual players may wanna puss out. 71 COOL SPOT (Virgin, 1993)
Are you ready to sell out!? Just like the Sega Genesis game you control that long forgotten mascot of the overly sugarbase soda 7up as the little bugger goes on a mission to save his kidnapped friends. OK, to be fair the game run and shoot play is the same but there are a few graphical improvements on the Snes version here like sharper colours and better shading effects to round out the package but sadly if seems like the controls took a bit of a hit cause the jumping is too loose and it leads to a lot of needless deaths especially in the later stages where spikes and instant kill water are all over the place. Also this is long game too with 10 plus stages and there are no passwords or save options to help you out. Still a fun action game through when it's all said and done and it doesn't hurt that the presenation is pretty damn good either

08 D FORCE (Asmik, 1993)

Now here is an interesting shooter featuring a powerful helicopter with the ability to drop and raise altitude thanks to the Super Nintendo's mode 7 scaling effects. It sounds like fun but you can only use the zooming feature in a few lack luster levels and when you use it to return to sky combat you can't see the enemies so it's easy to die for the cheapest reason. If that wasn't bad enough the graphics and music are well below average and the gameplay action is nothing special either. At least it's true in advertising because this is a 'D' alright.

Cool, here is Duffy Duck (using his space persona Duck Dodgers) in his own game. Like you would expect this is an action game where our hero blasts his way through hordes of aliens to save the galaxy. The problem is your main weapon is insanely weak and it even knocks you back a bit annoyingly every time you use it. You can use other weapons in the game thankfully but they're limited of course so get ready for a tough game here. The sound effects are fairly impressive and it even sounds like Daffy Duck in game too but other then some recognizable Warner Bros. characters here and there, the graphics look bland and overly repetitive. Daffy's game is good but the boring stages and high difficulty will put off a lot of gamers.

What to be the bad guy? Demon's Crest lets you play as a winged creature from those Ghouls N' Ghosts games as he tries to conquer the demon world by reclaiming his stolen crests. This cool looking horror/action/RPG comes with creepy graphics, moody music and eerie sounds so that alone is awesome. The game is a little too short with only 7 lands to explore but it was an incredible ride reguardless.

45 DIRT TRAX FX (Acclaim, 1996)

There are not too many FX games for the Super Nintendo but I managed to find another one here. Dirt Trax FX is a 3D dirt bike racing game with some interesting looking courses but the extremely blocky polygons and very low speeds just ruin it. Time as not been kind to this game and the action is pretty slow but I guess we should be thankful this game was even released considering this is a Super FX title.

89 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY (Nintendo/Rare, November 1994)

It's the long awaited return of Donkey Kong after nearly a decade of nearly nothing believe it or not. This awesome 32 meg update to the arcade classic uses computer rendered 2D graphics so the game manages to look even better than most 32-bit 3DO and 64-bit Atari Jaguar titles. The game also has realistic sound effects but the background music isn't as impressive but I don't hate it either. This plays similar to Nintendo's earlier Super Mario World but with more linear levels and much nicer graphics of course.

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2: Diddy Kong's Quest (Nintendo/Rare, December 2, 1995)
My favourite of the popular DKC games, because it has both Dixie and Diddy Kong in it and there are the best ones of the Kong's family in my opinion. In this game you must now help Diddy Kong rescue Donkey Kong from King Drool (who is dressed up like a pirate) and prove to Cranky Kong that he can become a hero. You can also find all the game's secret kerm coins and can get the real ending too if you like. DKC2 is an excellent platformer with killer graphics, rich sounds, and pretty deep game play.

92 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 3: Dixie's Double Trouble (Nintendo/Rare, November 1996)
More of what I love but the new character Kiddy Kong kinda sucks here though. If you liked the first two DKC games than this is a absolute must have as well as the 2D levels and tons of levels are all well designed. I also love the new giant bosses and various bear shops which help expand the game a bit. In the end if you loved the other two games then you will love this as well even though putting a N64 in the game was kind of shameless.

58 DOOM (Midway/ID software, 1995)
This popular first person shooting game comes to the SNES thanks to the powers of the FX chip. Before you get too excited however, there is no save feature so you have to finish the complete game in one sitting and you can forgot about the multi-player as well. SNES Doom may look great at first and the classic demon killing action in 3D is still here but it gets to be very dull after a few hours and those famous PC graphics also take a hit despite the game being in a fancy red cartridge.

40 DOUBLE DRAGON V: The Shadow Falls (Tradewest/Technos, 1993)

What could have been a triumphant return for the legendary fighting series is just turned into a rather lame Street Fighter II clone from the short lived Double Dragon the animated series. The controls are decent and there are a lot of fighters to pick from (well, ten use to be a lot back then at least) too but the game's dorky characters and questionable animation just ruin the whole experience.

64 DRACULA X (Konami, 1996)
All right, another Castlevania game! In this title you are playing as Richter Belmont and you must save your members of your family including your bride to be from the evil Count Dracula. This game actually plays quite differently than its popular PC Engine CD-Rom counterpart but not for the better unfortunately. Although the graphics and music are pretty good here, some levels are way too short, the whip doesn't go in 8 directions, and the cute little girl Maria is not even playable here either so the game is lacking some serious depth. In the end this version of Dracula X is a very stardard Castlevania game which is still good but it comes with little new as well.

70 DRAGON VIEW (Kemco, 1995)
Never heard of this? Dragon View is surprisingly a fun action/RPG with the world map in 3D and the action scenes are 2D based so the action is easy to get into. This has a good story line too but the only compliant I see is the action can get a little stale at times. Still a solid game though and it's definitely worth a look.

52 DR. FRANKIN (DTMC, 1993)
In this odd ball adventure platformer you help a cartoony Frankenstien monster dude while he takes on other not so scary monsters out in this rather routine action game here. The game is playable at least but there is nothing special overall in terms of graphics, sounds, and for a reanimated green monster he sure has limited range in his attacks.

EARTHBOUND (Nintendo/EAD, 1995)

This is Nintendo's addictive RPG where it's modern day (well, 199X at least) and you are a playing as a young boy and his friends on a mission to fight off a group of invading aliens. The graphics are very flat and cartoony and to be perfectly honest; are an embarassment to the true powers of SNES, but that's the only major complaint about this awesome game though. The music really fits the theme of this game well and the adventure itself is quite large and should take a while to finish. Earthbound is very original and fun to play and yes, that Ness guy from Super Smash Bros. is the one from this game.

SECOND OPINION!
I visited your website and pretty much agree with your review accept I felt the graphics deserve a little more than a 2. No they are not cutting edge by any means, but it seems there is always somthing going on on the screen, especially in town, theres lots of people moving around, birds flying over, vehicles moving up and down the street and so forth.
I would grade the graphics a 5- 6.
The music and sound is really good - 8,
and of course the gameplay is awesome-9!

63 EARTH DEFENSE FORCE (Jaleco, 1991)

Here is a short lived 8 meg shooter with 6 long levels and 8 different weapon set ups. The cool thing about this game is that your aircraft can even gain experience for every enemy wasted so there is a chance to get your firepower to do more damage but I wish you could switch guns in mid game since being stuck with just one weapon during one overly long stage is pretty lame. EDF is short but it's still a solid shooter for the Super Nintendo even though there are still tons of better ones in the genre.

86 EARTHWORM JIM (Interplay, 1994)

The only 24 meg game that dared rival the well hyped Donkey Kong Country in the Fall of 1994. This 2D action game about a powerful worm in a space suit is loaded with with incredible comic-like artwork, great music in each level and it even comes with a lot of funny material as well. The run and gun game play in nothing new and there is no save or password here either but Earthworm Jim is still a must play!

77 EARTHWORM JIM 2 (Interplay, 1995)
The sequel to Earthworm Jim features the same old platforming action but now there are new guns like the Barn Blaster, and the useless bubble gun plus you even had a new snot friend in your backpack so you can grab on to new ledges. The new levels are not as much fun as the first game because of the tedious repetition in the puppy catching and balloon flying scenes but it's still a good game with a lot of action.

EEK THE CAT (Fox Interactive, 1993)

I kind of liked this Fox cartoon show about the misadventures of a purple cat with his much fatter girlfriend when I was younger but the game itself here was absolutely horrible. This is all thanks to the annoying level objectives (you mean I have to protect that big fat pink blob over there across the level) and even worse the in-game music is just dreadful. Eek the Cat has bad controls, average visuals, and the escorts stage level structure is just not fun making the whole thing absolutely forgettable.
