Down and Dirty Reviews: Snes -- A - E

Nintendo says that this system is still alive, but we haven't seen a new game since Frogger in 1998.  Oh well, there's still a huge collection of SNES games here and a lot of goods ones too.  Choose wisely now.

A to E

The overall scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sounds, and gameplay are out of 10.

Score / Name
70 7th SAGA (Enix, 1992)
In this unique game you select from 7 different warriors in a difficult mission to protect your kingdom. 7th Saga also comes with some good looking graphics especially in the 3D mode7 battles. Who will you pick to save the world in this grand and difficult adventure? 7th Saga isn't too revolutionary but it should please RPG fans.

83 ACTRAISER (Enix, 1991)
This great 8 meg game here is not only a decent little platform game with good old hack n' slash action but it's also a great simulation game as well. In the game guide a fallen spiritual warrior through 10 side scrolling levels of various monsters and then try to restore the towns they have destroyed. Actraiser may have impressive graphics and excellent music but the only downside to the game kind of short. It was still fun to rebuild this world here.

61 ACTRAISER 2 (Enix, 1993)
What should have been a great game since this is a follow up to one of the better launch titles for the Snes is nothing more then a very hard to control action sequel starring a new but much slower warrior. It should also be mentioned that those fun create a town modes are now gone from the original too so the focus on the action was nice idea but overall it didn't work out in the end. Actraiser 2 is a huge disappointment.

21 AEROBIZ (Koei, 1993)
What can be more fun than running your own airline? "I got an idea, ANYTHING!" Maybe Koei should stick with more historical lore instead of worrying about how someone would run some stupid airport.

42 AERO The ACROBAT (Sunsoft, 1994)
Here is yet another cheap and rather average action platformer starring some stupid looking circus bat that Sunsoft was marketing as their mascot. Not only is Aero the Acrobat a lame hero but it's way too hard for its own good and it's not recommend for the casual gamer. Despite some cool ideas, there is no real fun here.

60 ALADDIN (Capcom, 1993)
This edition is different then the Sega Genesis game but it's not really better because of the very easy difficulty and slightly dull graphics here. Makes a good rental though if your store is stupid enough to even rent out Super Nintendo games anymore.

77 ALIEN 3 (Ljn, 1993)
This is sure one awesome looking 16 meg action platformer game here with tons of levels with several different objectives to master. In the game you control a bald women looking to stop an alien investion at a prison colony. One thing that really stands out here is the game's stunning life-like graphics with great lighting effects and realistic sound effects are also pretty dam good as well. The controls can be a little slow to react to my commands at times but overall Alien 3 for the SNES is just another video game that's better than the movie.

51 AN AMERICAN TAIL: Fievel Goes West (Hudson Soft, 1995)
In this cartoon license game here you help this young rat shoot out the evil cats out of town in this very average platformer. Other than some nice graphics and decent controls Fievel Goes West has nothing really special about it. Maybe younger kids will like it.

80 ARCADE'S GREATEST HITS: Atari Edition (Midway/Atari, 1996)
This awesome cart includes the original Tempest, Battle Zone, Missile Command, Asteroids, Super Breakout, and Centipede; all these are classic Atari games from arcade's golden age all in one package. This is prefect for all the retro gamers out there who love classic arcade games from the early 1980's but I'm disappointed that you can't save your scores here.

62 ARCADE'S GREATEST HITS: Williams EDITION (Midway, 1995)

The first edition of Midway's classic arcade collection from the early 80's includes the hit games Defender, Defender II, Joust, Robotron 2084, and Sinistar all in one. This is a nice collection of 5 games but why did Midway give the option to have up to 99 lives in most of the settings. Is this a Game Genie or a real game cartridge here?

54 ART OF FIGHTING (SNK, November 1993)

This game is a total rip off of Capcom's Street Fighter II, the only real difference is that there are only two playable characters in the story mode plus there is only one real ending as well. Art of Fighting may have some new ideas like using spirit gauges that limits your special moves plus the game also tries to focus on a main story instead on separate quests but these features could also be seen as negatives to some people. The graphics and scratchy sounds are certainly down graded from the Neo Geo cousin but the game still has some of the zooming effects which is rare for a SNES fighter.
For 1 or 2 players

77 AXELAY (Konami, 1992)
In this cool shooter you must save your peaceful planet from powerful invading alien fleets, the only problem is your all alone on the quest for freedom. Axelay is not as fun or as deep as Konami's early SNES shooter Gradius III but it looks a lot better in presentation. This game has amazing looking 3D and 2D effects and well designed art plus if that wasn't enough the music is also incredible. Sadly the game is a little on the short side with only 6 levels so the whole experience is a short one. If you love shooters though then this game is sure to please!

48 BART'S NIGHTMARE (Acclaim, 1992)

I certainly liked the way this Simpsons game looks and sounds like since this looks a lot like the famous and long running TV show but the game play is very unremarkable. The main quest doesn't have a lot to do and the mini quests in this title are way too hard late into the game. Despite the great idea, you should avoid this unfair game.

81 BATMAN and ROBIN (Konami, 1994)

This awesome looking platform game here is based on the hit cartoon show complete with all the famous super villains bosses like the Joker, Catwomen, Two Face, Poison Ivy, and lots more. Although the game may appear to be a simple beat up the bad guys sort of game here, it does come with good controls and a great list of weapons. Fans of the show will love this great game and action fans will like it too.

51 BATMAN RETURNS (Konami, 1992)
It's Final Fight all over again but something's different this time! "Why is Cody now wearing a Batman costume?" Although this is one of the better Final Fight clones out there, it still suffers from cheap and unoriginal game play. Just try and fight Catwomen and not get hit here!

41 BATTLE CLASH (Nintendo, 1992)

*SuperScope required
Battle Clash is a short lived light gun mech shooter with a mini anime-like story line as you battle giant robots one on one. This is better then most gun games because you can carry multiple weapons but that alone can't save the limited game play here.

64 BATTLETOADS: BATTLEMANIACS (Tradewest/Rare, 1992)
The official sequel to the original Battletoads on NES and the Sega Genesis finally arrives on the Snes. Sure the game was a good beat em up and the graphics and sound weren't too bad either but it wasn't too innovative over the last title unfortunately and believe it or not but the game is even harder.

58 BATTLETOADS/DOUBLE DRAGON The Ultimate Team (Tradewest, 1994)
The Battletoads and the Double Dragons team up to save what is left of their careers in this one game here. It didn't work by the way because this is a very boring fighter with some limited fighting techniques and I don't think these two will team up again in my life time.
For 1 or 2 players
graphics: 5

65 BIOMETAL (Activision, 1993)
Here is a good yet virtually unheard of shooter with a unique orb defense system plus this also features techno music from the band 2 Unlimited. The action is intense but its too bad that the game was so short or it would have scored even higher.

75 BLACKTHRONE (Interplay, 1993)
Remember the game Out of this World? This game plays a lot like that alien adventure but this is a far more gritty game as you fight to save your kingdom in a ruined universe. Black Throne is a short but fairly difficult action game that requires a lot strategy.

graphics: 7

56 BLAZEON (Atlus, 1992)
The game's big selling point is that your ship can capture up to 7 different enemy crafts and each unit has different weapons which may or may not help you in some situations. Be careful, although Blazeon may not look like much, don't underestimate the game's challenging later levels. I still haven't been able to finish this one and I was able to complete R Type. Blazeon has a cool idea for a shooter but it's a little dull in some parts of the levels there is almost no action going on at all in certain places.

45 B.O.B. (EA, 1993)
This action platformer started out OK but then it got soooo boring! In the game you must help B.O.B. the robot repair his space car so he could go out on his date but it won't be easy because this game goes on way too long. BOB the game has such average graphics and sounds that gets a big 'Who Cares' award.

70 BREATH of FIRE (Square/Capcom, 1992)
In the game you help young man named Ryu so he can rescue his sister from a evil army and discover his inter dragonpower to save the world. Square would bring a Capcom RPG to Canada and the states but they would leave other great RPG's behind like Secret of Mana 2 in the land of the rising sun for some reason? BOF is a great RPG that's not very original but it's still a good way to kill some time.

73 BREATH of FIRE II (Capcom, 1996)

75 BUBSY (Accolade, 1992)
The new bobcat mascot here in this game starred in a pretty fun game............ only the first Bubsy game is really any good though. Not only is the action fast but this cat is a real smartass with a lot of funny digital one liners. Bubsy is a good buy if you are looking for a platformer but be prepared for a challenge since he can only take one hit to kill him off.

46 BUBSY 2 (Accolode, 1993)
What could have been a good game has turned into a very corny sequel with a bunch of cheesy new jokes, poor level design, and a new annoying music feature: the faster bubsy's runs the faster the music goes too. Bubsy 2 tries to improve on the first game but they didn't even fix any of the biggest problems like the one hit deaths and the overall lame appeal Bubsy himself.

82 BUST A MOVE (Taito, 1994)
The original Puzzle Bubble arcade game comes to the SNES with a new name and tons of options like Arcade, Vs. Com, Endless and much more to help with the replay value. In this puzzle game you help those cute little dinosaurs from the Bubble Bobble series try to clear the screen of bubbles. Bust A Move is a very addictive game that great for all ages but if you want lots of action and amazing graphics then look elsewhere.

33 CLIFFHANGER (Sony Imagesoft, 1992)

Yet another movie tie in now turned into a action video game. Yuppie! Cliffhanger started out well because it reminded me of a new age Double Dragon but the action quickly got monotonous with the same old enemies attacking me and the climbing and avalanche stages are even worse.

CHRONO TRIGGER (Squaresoft, 1995)
Want something off the page! Chrono Trigger is an awesome time traveling RPG with excellent 32 meg presentation plus there are a massive 10 different endings. You play the role of Crono here, a young and skilled samurai in 1000 AD. Crono and his friends discover a plot to ruin the earth by a strange and powerful enemy. Save the world and stop the Day of Lavos from ever happening. Chrono Trigger features a unique Combo attack system to combine characters attacks in powerful single blows.

63 CHUCK ROCK

Chuck Rock first appeared on the Genesis and now Nintendo players can see what the fuss is about. In the game you help Chuck the Cave Man use his belly flop attack to stop his dinosaur rivals across 5 levels. CR is a good platform game but your attacks have very short range and if you're good enough at the game it can be finished in less then a hour.

68 CLAY FIGHTER (Interplay, 1993)
This one on one fighting game is actually pretty funny and the digital clay modelled graphics here are rather impressive too but the fighting itself is certainly not as intense or as fun as other big brawlers like Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat. Clay Fighter is not the most original game out there but you gotta love that fat Elvis character, eh?

50 CLAYFIGHTER Tournament Edition (Interplay, 1994)
This game is just like the original Clay Fighter but now there are a few new backgrounds and tournament modes. BIG FREAKIN' DEAL! This was a rental only game at Blockbuster (no late fees my as$!) so that's why it's not a very impressive spin off but at least it's kind of rare. If you already have the first then there is no need to pick this limited upgrade here.

30 CLAYFIGHTER 2 Judgement Clay (Interplay, 1994)

Sure, the first Clay Fighter was above average but what the heck happened here? C2 is a absolutely weak sequel to the original clay fighter with only 3 returning characters and 5 new lameo added to the line up. What I noticed the most about C2 was the really poor animation and cheap computer AI.

CONTRA III The Alien Wars (Konami, 1992)
The popular Contra shooting series returns to the video game scene but now it debuts on a 16-bit system for the first time. The game is still the same old run and gun kill everything that moves and the invading aliens give you a lot of opposition so there is tons of action here. There are only 6 levels instead of the usual 8 in the NES games but it's still an action packed shooter featuring new weapons, different techniques, and even more aggressive enemies. There is nothing too ground breaking here and the game ends way too quickly but it was still a wild ride that takes a lot of skill to master.
For 1 or 2 players
graphics: 6

74 CYBERNATOR (Konami, 1993)

Cybernator maybe a pretty stupid name but the game itself is actually pretty good. In the game you pilot a giant 40 foot mech on a mission to stop to stop a massive army of invaders. The controls are very stiff and take some getting use to but once mastered Cybernator is a very good 2D action game with solid graphics and sounds.

63 DARIUS TWIN (Taito, 1991)
This game is a above average two player shooter that would have been a better game if it wasn't so short and so easy. Still Darius Twin is a fun and easy to play shooter with some impressive bosses but it's still not as good as Taito's earlier Sagaia on the Genesis.

79 DEMON'S CREST (Capcom, 1994)
What to be the bad guy? Demon's Crest lets you play as a winged creature from those Ghouls N' Ghosts games. In this cool looking horror/action/RPG with creepy graphics, moody music and eerie sounds. The game is a little too short with only 7 lands to explore but it was a awesome ride reguardless.

45 DIRT TRAX FX (Acclaim, 1996)

87 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY (Nintendo/Rare, November 1994)

It's the long awaited return of Donkey Kong after nearly a decade of nearly nothing believe it or not. This awesome 32 meg update to the arcade classic uses computer rendered 2D graphics so the game even looks better than most 32-bit 3DO and 64-bit Atari Jaguar titles. The game also has realistic sound effects but the music isn't as impressive. This plays similar to Nintendo's earlier Super Mario World but with more linear levels and much nicer graphics of course.

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2: Diddy Kong's Quest (Nintendo/Rare, December 2, 1995)
My favourite of the popular DKC games, because it has both Dixie and Diddy Kong in it and there are the best ones of the Kong's family. Help Diddy Kong rescue Donkey Kong from King Drool (who is dressed up like a pirate) and prove to Cranky Kong that he can become a hero. Find all the secret kerm coins and can get the real ending. DKC2 is an excellent platformer with killer graphics, rich sounds, and deep game play.

48 DOOM (Midway/ID software, 1995)
This popular first person shooting game comes to the SNES thanks to the powers of the FX chip. Before you get too excited however, there is no save feature so you have to finish the complete game in one sitting and you can forgot about the multi-player as well. SNES Doom gets to be very dull after a few hours and the graphics also take a serious hit despite the game being in a fancy red cartridge.

52 DOUBLE DRAGON V: The Shadow Falls (Tradewest, 1993)

64 DRACULA X (Konami, 1996)
This plays differently than its popular PC Engine CD-Rom counterpart but not for the better unfortunately. Some levels are missing and the cute Maria is not even playable here either. This version of Dracula X is a very stardard Castlevania game which is still good but it comes with little new.

70 DRAGON VIEW (Kemco, 1995)
Never heard of this? Dragon View is surprisingly a fun action/RPG with the world map in 3D and the action scenes are 2D based so the action is easy to get into. This has a good story line too but the only compliant I see is the action can get a little stale at times. Still a solid game though.

81 EARTHBOUND (Nintendo/EAD, 1995)
This is Nintendo's addictive RPG where it's modern day and you are fighting invading aliens. The graphics are very flat and cartoony and are an embarassment to the true powers of SNES, but that's the only major complaint about this awesome game though. The music really fits the theme of this game well and the game itself is quite large and should take a while to finish. Earthbound is very original and fun to play and yes, that Ness guy from Super Smash Bros. is the one from this game.

SECOND OPINION!
I visited your website and pretty much agree with your review accept I felt the graphics deserve a little more than a 2. No they are not cutting edge by any means, but it seems there is always somthing going on on the screen, especially in town, theres lots of people moving around, birds flying over, vehicles moving up and down the street and so forth.
I would grade the graphics a 5- 6.
The music and sound is really good - 8,
and of course the gameplay is awesome-9!
-Larry Elliott

63 EARTH DEFENSE FORCE (Jaleco, 1991)
Here is a short lived 8 meg shooter with 6 long levels and 8 different weapon set ups. Your aircraft can even gain experience has you destroy the many opponents so the firepower can go more damage but I wish you could switch guns in mid game. EDF is short but it's still a solid shooter for the Super Nintendo.

86 EARTHWORM JIM (Interplay, 1994)

The only 24 meg game that dared rival the well hyped Donkey Kong Country in the Fall of 1994. This 2D action game about a powerful worm in a space suit is loaded with with incredible comic-like artwork, great music in each level and it even comes with a lot of funny material as well. The run and gun game play in nothing new and there is no save or password here either but Earthworm Jim is still a must play!

20 EEK THE CAT (Fox Interactive, 1993)
