Down and Dirty Reviews: E-Reader -- A - Z

Although it's good to see the NES back, some of these games are definitely not for everyone and there is a reason Nintendo stop the series. Let's not forget that some games will have to be changed to fit on the small screen and all e-reader games are only one player at the moment. All reviews are by the StarSoldier unless noted.

The overall scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sound, and game play are out of 10.

59 BALLOON FIGHT-E (Nintendo, September 16, 2002)
Balloon Fight-E loses points over the original NES title from October 1985 because of the missing two player option but thankfully this game doesn't lose to much else and it can be some fun to play. In the game you play the role of man tied to balloons trying to knock out other rival balloonists in the skies; the only way to win a fight against your competition is to hit them while you're higher than your opponent. Sound familiar? This game is a lot like the famous arcade legend Joust from the early 1980's if any of you remember that far back. Balloon Fight-E also has the Game B; this is a tough adventure type survival mode to add a little more play to this program. Not a bad buy for E-reader owners but it is not a

18 BASEBALL-E (Nintendo, November 2002)

Baseball on the NES was as mediocre as it gets but with the two player mode now gone, the game makes for a pretty pointless purchase. Baseball is a basic sports game with some decent animation and cute graphics but some are going to really hate not being able to position the out fielders. Hardly worth the $5.99 here and this game should have stayed in 1985.

46 DONKEY KONG-E (Nintendo, November 2002)
The NES version was bad enough because it wasn't quite arcade perfect but why Nintendo did not improve this dud at all is beyond me? For anyone unfamiliar with the original Donkey Kong, this was actually Mario's first real starring moment in video games right here in Nintendo's smash hit of 1981. You'll think a retro freak like me would be happy to see the good old Donkey Kong in pure form but if you ever seen my NES review then you should know what to expect from this card. Sadly the NES-e version of Donkey Kong is still missing that entire conveyer belt level so the game is still feels very incomplete. I didn't want to scan the cards nine times to play a second rate game. Donkey Kong for the NES may have been good to have around the house for sentimental value but I can't see anybody playing this on a regular basis thanks to the super simple game play and Nintendo's lackluster effort with their own game. This e-reader game fails to impress me even for the low price.

57 DONKEY KONG JR.-E (Nintendo, September 16, 2002)
Donkey Kong Jr. was much better translation wise then Nintendo's pathetic Donkey Kong and as a e-card game this makes a decent purchase for retro freaks. In this game you play as Donkey Kong's son and the young ape is on a rescue mission to save his father from the evil Mario? Yes, it's true! Mario is now the head bad guy in this game! A cool sequel to the popular arcade hit and Nintendo may even throw this game for free to some of you E-reader accessories buyers!

65 EXCITEBIKE-E (Nintendo, September 16, 2002)

Excite bike is an impressive motocross game that was released way back in 1985. The game has the unique option to program your own levels and if you don't want to make you own then there are lots of other tracks to play on. Excite Bike is a challenging and fun 2D racing title and this port works well here.

32 ICE CLIMBERS-E (Nintendo, November 2002)
If you're lucky enough not to know who the Ice Climbers are then here's the lowdown. One or two eskimos with hammers try to reach the top of 30 plus stages while avoiding enemies and hazards along the way. The reason this game was never a success was because the controls of the jumps are super slow and really sluggish. Why in the world were these losers in the latest Super Smash games anyway?

34 MARIO BROS.-E (Nintendo, November 2002)
Mario ditches Luigi again and goes solo for the original Mario Brothers game for e-reader. The game can still be a fun adventure but you have to ask yourself if you really need another Mario Bros. title since you can get the game with other GBA Mario's available?

50 PINBALL-E (Nintendo, September 16, 2002)
Sure this game of Pinball is about as boring as it sounds but it still plays well enough to justify the six bucks. Even Mario makes a cameo appearance during a mini game here to change things up a bit. The only problems here in Nintendo Pinball are the inability to tilt the table and some may not like the whole split screen thing so you can't see the full table all the time. Pinball-E is very average overall.

41 TENNIS-E (Nintendo, September 16, 2002)

Tennis from Nintendo is so simple and yet so easy to play, it could be a decent choice for people looking for retro Tennis action. This game also has different difficulties to add some more challenge then the usual E-reader sports game but NES Tennis can only go so far and the appeal is still very limited.

02 URBAN CHAMPION-E (Nintendo, November 2002)
When Nintendo released their anticipated second batch of E-reader card games, I was really surprised when Urban Champion was one of the newer games out for eager E-players. For those of you lucky people out there than haven't heard this game yet then please read this review just to be fore warned. Urban Champion-e wouldn't have gotten my first ever negative rating if the two player mode was left in and if it wasn't so easy but no dice. Not worth the time it takes to load up and you should only play it just to get an excellent example of terrible programming at it's finest..... and make sure you only get it for free or if somebody is paying you to take it off there hands.
