Down and Dirty Reviews: GameGear -- A - Z |
There are loads of good games here
for this semi-popular portable system if you don't mind the 8-bit blurry
graphics and poor Master System like sound though. The overall scores are out of 100. The graphics, sounds, and game play are out of 10. |

ALADDIN (Sega, 1993)
This
was based on the popular Disney movie like the Genesis version was.
Sega's Aladdin is a fairly good action platformer
with some above average graphics and sounds but the only problem here is that
the game was way too easy. A few hours should do it and then you're done with
it.

81 BOBBLE BUBBLE (Taito, 1993)
This is almost just like the cool arcade platform from 1985 complete with
the over 100 levels and this even as the option for two player action. In the
game you must help the two cursed tiny dinosaurs Bob and Bub rescue their girlfriends
from evil monsters and you also have to help them return back to human original
form. It sure won't be easy because because each screen is filled with
crafty enemies like robots, ghosts, and springers. So what makes this game so
special is that Bob and Bub can fight their enemies by trapping them in self
made bubbles and then burst em while they're captured. You better be quick though
or they will break free eventually plus you also have to worry about your time
too or a annoying white ghost will try to hunt you down he will get you if you
do not get rid of the remanding bad guys.

79 BUST A MOVE (Taito, 1993)
If anybody remembers the Super Nintendo or 3DO versions of
Bust A Move then the Game Gear version should look very familiar as well. The
game is famous for being part shooter and part puzzle game and if you want lots
of features you got em. There are tons of options like 100 main levels, Vs.
mode for 2 players or computer opponents, a Endless option so you can go for
the top score, and lots more. If Columns disappointed you then maybe
this will be up your alley instead.

57 COLUMNS (Sega, 1990)
Columns was suppose to be Sega's answer to Nintendo's Tetris but
nobody really liked it all too much. The objective of the game is to guide falling
jewels and then match up a roll of three coloured gems to make them disappear.
The game is good but very unexciting with a serious lack of game modes. This
puzzle game packed in with the original Game Gear's so hopefully you can find
one with a system or just dirt cheap.

77 DR. ROBOTNIK'S MEAN BEAN (Sega/Compile, 1992)
It's a portable Puyo Puyo game for all you Japanese gamers. The game
is easy to enough learn for any player as you match cute looking coloured blobs
to score points in chain combos. Simply survive while you try to load your garbage
blobs to your enemy's side and if there are too many blobs on your enemy's section,
thats how you win against your current opponent. A perfect puzzle game for the Game
Gear!

42 DRAGON CRYSTAL (Sega, 1990)
One of the first Game Gear games ever............ and it really shows. This
is a basic action RPG that's very choppy in design and very cheap in game play
department because you trade hits with enemy encounters similar to the awful Hydlide NES. Dragon Crystal is a very dated game even by Game Gear standards.

66 EARTHWORM JIM (Interplay, 1995)
This is an OK version of the popular 16-bit action game that retains a lot
of the game play of the other editions. In this action game you play the role of a standard worm that accidently gets a high powered super suit and becomes the wacky hero: Earthworm Jim. Now you must defeat the evil aliens that are trying to get the suit back. I would have rated this higher if the
Game Gear had more buttons on the unit, using the gun and the head whip gets
very awkward.

50 FANTASTIC DIZZY (Camercia)
In this odd game you're a egg on a massive treasure hunt. Collect various
items and see if they can help you on your mission but Dizzy can only carry
three of these items at once. Although the game can get tedious at times it's
still a ok action game if you never heard of it before.

62 GP RIDER (Sega, 1994)
This is kind of what Super Hang On would look like on the road. GP
Rider gives you a lot of options before you start a race and the graphics are
easy to see and well defined too. This was way better then Sonic Drift 2.

72 HALLEY WARS (Taito, 1992)
You don't see too many of these on the Game Gear! Halley Wars is a very
fun vertical shooter with some great arcade action and a decent power up system.
I'm always a sucker for good shoot em ups and although the graphics and music
were nothing special I still feel this one was a little underrated.

59 JEOPARDY (Gametek, 1992)
The long running game show Jeopardy comes to the portable market and it
plays fairly well here on the Game Gear. The game's graphics are easy to make
out and it even has the famous theme music from the TV show. If you want to
test your brain for a bit then be sure to look this up.

12 LAST ACTION HERO (Sony Imagesoft,
1994)
Who doesn't like to watch an Arnold movie once in a while? Although the
movie wasn't considered a huge blockbuster I think the game about a magic ticket
that takes you various and exciting locations could work in a video game at
least. No such luck! Arnold is tough to control and most of your enemies are
carrying weapons where you are just using your fist here. Last Action Hero is
another video game that didn't have a lot of effort put into it.

50 MAPPY (Namco, 1981, 1991)
*Japanese
Mappy is a fun arcade game of cops and robbers but this title has cats and
mice running around instead. You help Mappy the mouse cop through a house house
filled rival cats, treasures, and strings to bounce on. Mappy is a good retro
title of the early eighties and you also can find this game on Namco's 'A'
museum Playstation title.

80 MEGA MAN (US Gold/Capcom, 1997)
Mega Man finally arrives on a Sega machine and this game has parts of the
NES games Mega Man 4, 5, and 2. The only problem I have with this other wise
fine translation it that it's a little on short side with only 7 levels but
there are no continues either which makes this one hard game. There is a Password
save feature included so you don't have to finish it in one sitting if you like
but you might not even need it. Mega Man for the Game Gear is a very rare game
because it was not only the only Mega Man game released on the system but it
was also one of the last Game Gear games released.

71 MS. PAC MAN (Namco, 1992)
Here is a good translation of a arcade classic and a perfect game for this portable
game system. In the game you control Ms. Pac Man on a mission to eat all the
dots on the screen but it won't be easy since there are four ghosts that want
to stop her. The music was a bit off though and some of the colours were changed
but Pac Man fans are still going like it.

67 MORTAL KOMBAT (Flying Edge/Midway, 1993)
The popular and
very contraversial one on one fighter with digital characters also came to the Game Gear and Acclaim actually did a pretty good job here.
Kano is missing from the original line up and you still have to input a code to unlock a lot of the gore but other than the stiff animation
it's still a great version of the bloody arcade classic.

70 MORTAL KOMBAT II (Acclaim/Midway, 1994)
Mortal Kombat
returns and now you can select from 8 fighters and get instant use of blood and violence in this even better sequel. Sure
there is a lot missing here compared to its 16-bit counterparts like characters, animation, and smoother game play but Game Gear
owners can't be too picky when it comes to fighters, eh? Thanks to the precise controls and decent graphics this is definitely one of the better beat em ups on the system.

I don't get it and I don't like it. In the game you help a penguin push around eggs and

wouldn't bet on it.

68 NINJA GAIDEN (Sega/Tecmo, 1990)
It doesn't play anything like the NES version............... but
maybe that's a good thing. This Ninja Gaiden game plays more like a Shinobi
game this time so it feels like a whole new game now even if it doesn't seem
the most original. Ninja Gaiden on the GG is short but it's not the worse in the series (like Ninja Gaiden III for the Xbox 360 or PS3).

60 PAC MAN (Namco,
1980, 1993)
Pac Man is a legendary arcade classic that always fun to play like in a
Tetris kind of way so it's cool to see this on the GG here. The game is simple: help your little yellow hero
eat his way through a maze filled with rotten ghosts and tons of food pelets.
Pac Man is old but the game play sure stands the test of time.

59 PAPERBOY 2 (Tengen/Atari Games, 1994)
It can be hard to see where you're throwing
the papers to on that small screen but if you loved the arcade game then you
may want to try it out too. The game is basically the same as the original has you try and throw your load at the right homes but now you can fire on the right side of the street and play as a Papergirl too.

66 SAMURAI SHODOWN (Tanaka/SNK, 1995)
One of my favourite SNK fighters comes to the GG. Sadly the big guys Earthquake, Tam Tam,
and Wan Fu are missing from this Game Gear SS title and they're some of my favourite
characters in the series. Still one of the better one on one fighters for the
system where the 9 characters each have their own unique weapon and a great list of moves. Samurai Shodown GG is not bad.

86 SHINING FORCE The SWORD of HAYJA (Sega, 1993)
This Strategy/RPG has a excellent story from

for the captured the sword of Hayja, in hopes of saving the land of Cypress
from invasion. Shining Force is a superior game!

71 SHINOBI (Sega, 1990)
It's good the way the game builds up level

playable with different abilities. I also like the clean graphics and the some
of the music too which even from the hit Revenge of Shinobi for the Genesis
at times. Worth picking up for a challenge too!

75 SONIC The Hedgehog (Sega, 1991)
This is a impressive remake for the Game Gear
with new levels not found in the award winning Genesis version. Sure the graphics

and that's most important.

66 SONIC the Hedgehog 2 (Sega, 1992)
Tails isn't playable in this version of Sonic
2 but at least he makes a cameo appearance. The game plays just like the original Game Gear Sonic the Hedgehog so this isn't a huge leap over
the last game. Jump on stuff, get rings, hand glide, get to end of level, all that good stuff. Sadly, Sonic can't even do the spin dash here but if you want more Sonic then this will do the job.

46 SONIC BLAST (Sega, 1996)
In what would prove to be one of the last Sonic

this Sonic was anything but a blast!

62 SONIC CHAOS (Sega, 1994)

plays fine.

26 SONIC DRIFT 2 (Sega, 1996)
Here is a really hard on the eyes 3D racing

73 STAR WARS (US Gold, 1992)
Not bad, not too bad at all. This game kind
of plays like the SNES versions of Star Wars and it even follows the
movie closely has you start out as Princess Lea trying to get away from the evil galactic empire. You then move on to the other
characters like Luke Skywalker as he tries to discover the ways of the force and all that movie junk but at least the controls here work well and many of the set pieces like the Death Star backdrops. Star Wars is a good investment for action seekers.

71 SUPER COLUMNS (Sega, 1992)

VIRTUA FIGHTER ANIMATION (Sega, 1996)
Actually better than the horrible Sega Genesis

mode. The controls are a little stiff but the graphics were fairly impressive
despite the lack of 3D polygons of course.

have a tough road ahead. Five worlds, five forms, excellent adventure/RPG action.
