Down and Dirty Reviews: Saturn -- A - Z

If you still own one or you just want to see what got trashed, then read on. I still own a lot of them and I'm very proud of my Sega Saturn collection here. Well, kind of proud I guess.

The scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sounds, and game play are out of 10.

Score / Name
60 ALBERT'S ODYSSEY (Working Designs/Sunsoft, 1997)
I just had to pick this up after after seeing Working Designs was behind it. Unfortunately, Albert's Odyssey is a very basic run of the mill 2D RPG by Sunsoft of Japan, but the game had its moments. The game's biggest weaknesses are the overly very repetitive fights with the same monsters appearing over and over again, and worst yet, it can be finished in only a few days. Still, if you're hungry for a good fantasy RPG with some solid graphics and sounds than this will fill the bill.

GAME OF THE MONTH COLLECTION!
75 ARCADE'S GREATEST HITS (Midway, 1996)

The Saturn has its fair share retro action and here you get 6 old school legends from the early 80's on one CD. The games are Defender I & II, Sinistar, Bubbles, Robotron 2084, and Joust. This game also gives you bonus video footage and developer dairies so if your love video game history then dive in. If you're into retro action then this CD is worth a look.

82 ARCADE'S GREATEST HITS Atari Edition (Midway, 1997)
The names of these games say it all: Asteroids, Battlezone, Centipede, Missile Command, Super Breakout, and Tempest. All of these six Atari legends are not only faithfully translated complete with some developer interviews but these titles are also some of the biggest video games from the early 80's. If you don't care about next generation graphics and sounds then get ready for some addictive old school action here.

65 ASTAL (Sega, November 1995)
Astal is a extremely good looking 2D action game with 6 large worlds to explore. In this game you help a angry young warrior save his friend from evil. The problem is guy you are playing as is a real jerk and I think Assh*(% would have been a better name. It's a good simple action game here that can be a lot of fun to play thanks to all the enemies and different challenges but why can't I save any time during the mission? This could have been a classic.

61 BAKU BAKU (Sega, 1996)
Here is a odd but very fun puzzle game featuring overly cute animals and the fruit they have to eat. The game play is very similar to titles like Puyo Pop but certain animals can only eat certain like the monkeys will only eat bananas. The story mode maybe too childish for some so be careful all you violent seekers out there. All you puzzle freaks just jump right in here.

70 BUBBLE BOBBLE COLLECTION (Acclaim/Taito, 1996)
This collection here includes 3 games from the Bobble Bubble series made popular in the mid 80's. The classic Bobble Bubble is the best game on this collection because the action is more consistent even though it's the oldest one here. The two Rainbow Islands games are fine but just too confusing and cute to be any serious fun.

80 BUST A MOVE 2X (Acclaim/Taito, 1995)
Bust A Move 2X is just like the PS version but this game comes with a brand new edit mode and some other bonus stuff like new intermissions. In this game you try to pop bubbles by throwing your bubbles of the same them but you better be quick or the computer will beat you to the punch or more bubble rows will appear. Sadly, I did notice some new load times as well which slows down the action a bit.

76 BUST A MOVE 3 (Natsume/Taito, 1997)
It's better a Bust A Move, its just really nothing new to the popular puzzle series where you toss bubbles at other bubbles for points. Bub and Bob are now joined by 6 other characters from the Taito universe and each one as their own garbage blocks they can throw at their opponents. This game doesn't have the four player mode like the N64 version but at least this one has more digital voices. "You can't go wrong with an good Bust A Move game though, I guess."

68 BURNING RANGERS (Sega/Sonic Team, June 1998)

Burning Rangers tells the story of 5 new age fire fighters and you gotta love that concept. Sadly, the visuals here look a little choppy in some places and the camera in hard to control as well but this 3D platformer has a lot of action and is not too bad for fans of original ideas out there. Good luck finding this game though.

Capcom's second retro collection includes 3 old Ghost & Globins (Ghost & Globins, Ghouls & Ghost, and Super Ghouls & Ghosts) games in one solid package. 64 CLOCKWORK KNIGHT 2 (Sega, 1996)
Here is a very good and challenging action game starring a toy knight in a interesting 2D/3D world. I think this wacky game came before the whole Toy Story craze so maybe Sega can sue Disney, eh? Anyway the game plays fine and there is some good platforming and forced scrolling action here but it isn't the most fast paced titles out there.

30 CONTRA: Legacy of War (Konami, 1996)
Before you get all misty eyed about a 3D Contra you should just play it first and then just cry in horror. In this overhead shooter you or a friend get to play as one of four characters on a mission to surpress a massive army just like all other Contras before it but now the game is less fun to play thanks to the spotty hit detection. To get a idea how bad this is, the arcade mini games are more fun than the action game itself and that's just sad.

This cute 3D platformer features some OK graphics with a surprising amount of detail that almost rival other popular titles like Super Mario 64. Where the game loses some serious points is in the controls; they don't work very well at all and the game's camera is even worse. The Croc is just that, a load of Croc.

75 DARIUS GAIDEN (Acclaim/Taito, 1996)
Remember all those other space shooters with robo fish like Sagaia and Super Nova before? Well this game has the same theme of those ones plus this is two players as well. Darius Gaiden is a intense and fairly difficult shooter originally released in the arcades by Taito. It's really tough thanks to all the on screen carnage and later bosses that have an insane amount of hit points but the graphics and music are excellent so this is great for fans of the series.

70 DAYTONA Championship Circuit Edition (Sega, 1997)
This upgrade to the original game has some new control where you can edit the handling kind of like in Sega Rally. Unfortunately, that also hurts this popular arcade series a little now because it can make things a bit more confusing to play since it's tough to know what conditions work best for each route unless you study the game like crazy but at least the graphics have been cleaned up a little bit. Daytona CC is a good buy for fans of the original.

This popular racing game is just like the famed arcade of the same name but the graphics are a little rough around the edges here. OK, they are really bad actually and I'm sure it didn't help Sega sell any Saturns. Fortunately, Daytona USA is easy to get into and even though there are only 3 tracks there is enough here to satisfy gamers for a while.

Yup, the famous 16-bit series got an upgrade here on the Saturn too. Not too much has changed since all the crazy levels involving catching falling puppies, blasting through dirt, and out running your arch rival Pyscrow in order to save Princess What's-Her-Name are still here but now you get more realistic visuals and a sharper soundtrack to go with the action. I would have liked to see more improvements like extra stages but it's still better then Earthworm Jim 3D.

This game has a cool idea. It's Virtua Fighter, it's Fighting Vipers, it's several others in one huge fighting package here plus some other cool goodies too. It's great to see a sequel to the classic racing series but the original motorcycle arcade game was better than this 3D upgrade I think because this upgrade has some weird physics. 71 MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH (Working Designs, October 1998)
The last official Sega Saturn game is this Action RPG featuring three young teenagers in a odd world invaded by monsters. Much like a ton of other Amine out there; three girls from different schools must work together to save a princess with their new found magic powers. OK, the story is a bit odd and the graphics are a bit too cartoonish but the well done cut scenes and decent voice acting are just some of the high lights of this cool Zelda-like quest. OK, there is some bad looking pop up now and again but the graphics overall are very stylist with awesome battle scenes. 60 STREET FIGHTER The Movie (Acclaim/Capcom, 1996)

If there was one game that needed to be put to sleep it would definitely have to be Street Fighter. Why you say? Street Fighter the Movie for example is nothing more then yet another Street Fighter II but this has digital actors from that forgettable movie. Even many of the moves and animations are the same and some characters like Fei Long didn't even make the cut. Weapons are allowed too and this version also includes a new story mode and a secret female character not found in the Playstation version but other then that it's the same game.

41 TOSHINDEN URA (Sega/Takana, 1997)
Not only does this game still looks like garbage, and now it even plays like garbage. You still get the same line up of characters and a few new one to try out too but what's the deal with the new super blocky characters and the poorly detail, uh? What's worse is that the game can be easily finished in a half hour.

59 ULTIMATE MORTAL KOMBAT 3 (Midway, 1996)

"Not again!" Ultimate Mortal Kombat adds a couple of characters that have a few new moves and some of the guys from MK 2 make a unwelcome comeback as well but there isn't much more then that sadly. It's still your standard one on one fighting game and there is nothing too special or ultimate at all. This once Saturn exclusive didn't help the Saturn any during the chaotic 32-bit wars either.

68 VIRTUA COP (Sega, November 1995)
Just like the name says you can be a cop for a day as you or a friend try to take down the crime activity in your city but it should only take a few hours or a day to finish it all unfortunately because this is a direct arcade port and there are only a handful of stages here. If you want a gun game for the Saturn Virtua Cop is one of the few choices you got. Take it or leave it.

72 VIRTUA COP 2 (Sega, 1997)
This sequel to the popular gun game is even more realistic with less cartoon-like villains and more heated action. Like the last Virtua Cop game you can play as two different officers and there is another female cop to help you out on your dangerous missions to stop vicious criminals and rescue hostages. The game is still your basic shoot the bad guys title but it's a good one.

65 VIRTUA FIGHTER (Sega/Am2, August 1995)
This Virtua Fighter game is a almost perfect arcade translation of the famous fully 3D one on one brawler. Sadly the game also comes with very few extras unlike Tekken for the Sony Playstation but still some may prefer the realism of Sega's offering over Namco's fighter anyway. You be the judge and try it for yourself, personal the game plays great but it sucks there are no endings or story lines during game itself.

78 VIRTUA FIGHTER 2 (Sega/Am2, 1995)

It's a even better fighter this time, but it's so darn hard now so only pros need apply. I have a question though: why are there only two new characters in the line up, it just seems kind of small to me? Still a great technical game with a ton of moves for Saturn fans and many consider it to be one of their favourite beat em ups as well.

60 VIRTUA FIGHTER REMIX (Sega, 1995)
This edition looks much better than the original Virtua Fighter when the Saturn was launched at least but sadly that's all you get here too. Sure, the original Virtua Fighter looked pretty bad with a lot of clipping issues and lost detail from the arcade version but other than the new looks the game is no difference in the one on one fighting game play at all. This isn't a must have title that's for sure.

57 WWF WRESTLEMANIA: The Arcade Game (Acclaim, 1995)
WWF Wrestlemania is not your standard wrestling game here. This is a very goofy looking Mortal Kombat-like game with a very outdated WWF roster. Anyone remember Doink the Clown character before he fought in WrestleMania X7? WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game is fun if you don't take it so seriously but there are still way better fighting games out there for the Saturn.
