Introduction and Story: |
When the Turbografx-16 system was first coming out in 1989 it had the hard job of getting the public's attention especially since there was tons of competitors out there. What better way to sell your console then by having a graphically stunning (for the time of course) for it, eh? China Warrior here was not only one of the launch games for the system but the main character you were playing as was absolutely giantic and looked very badass. Unfortunately, this game here is a very limited side scrolling beat em up starring some fighter who looks very similar to Bruce Lee that's trying to defeat the evil Drunken Master guy. |
The game play and bottomline: | |
In the game your hero is always moving to the right in this forced side scrolling action game. Basically if anything gets in the way punch or kick with a mere handful of strikes it and move on. Almost everything under the sun is trying to kill you too like harmless looking monks, butterflies, spears, rocks, and even more random junk like that. There are only 12 levels in the game and they really don't differ much from one another. If the game has anything going for it (which isn't much) the challenge is there since you can't continue (unless ya cheat) and the controls are not the most responsive either and that's not helping me like this game anymore. OK, the characters are quite huge and even fairly detailed as well as some of them fill up nearly a quarter of the screen but of course, they are also very stiff looking in the process so there's a huge trade off. Yet another problem with this game is the constant looping music which doesn't even change when you enter a new set of levels. China Warrior was only created to show off the Turbografx-16 graphical abilities, because the game play is laughable when compared to a real fighting game like Double Dragon. Unlike Chinese food you won't be wanting to come back for more in a hour. |
Here is my weird 4 minute video review of China Warrior too! Warning: there is some swearing in it because it got me pretty mad: |
