Down and Dirty Reviews: Sega Dreamcast -- A - Z

The Sega Dreamcast sure has its share of great looking games like Rayman 2, and Jet Grind Radio but also some great RPG's like Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II. Don't forget all the lousy wrestling and shooting titles here too though.

The Scores are out of 100.

The graphics, sounds, and game play are out of 10.

SCORE / TITLE
60 ATARI ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Atari/Infogames, July 2001)
This kind of awesome collection of games not only includes tons of retro info for hard-core Atari fans on all 12 games on the disc but it also includes faithful translations of the early arcade hits. The games on here are Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battle Zone, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Break Out, Tempest, and Warlords. Sadly, there are no other popular third party old school titles on here like say Pac Man, Space Invaders, Pitfall, Defender, and lots more (none of these names were actually owned by Atari but they were popular during the Atari 2600 era so they automatically come to mind well you think of Atari unfortunately) but for less than 20 bucks it's really not too bad for some good old memories. With all that old 80's info on the games why didn't anybody bother to program or include a VMU save option, uh?

41 BLUE STINGER (Activision, 1999)
Blue Stinger here was once a promising title but it's somewhat slow and very linear Resident Evil style game play didn't wow everybody. The game looks kind of good in the graphic department at least but that's only compared to older action games on the Dreamcast. Blue Stinger may have a good name but the game is too low on action unfortunately and it doesn't age too well either.

68 BUST A MOVE 4 (Acclaim/Taito, 2000)
It seems like every system has a Bust A Move on it, eh? The game has more cute characters and you can use a new combo effect in the Versus mode but every else is just the same as the previous bubble busting titles. Bust A Move is great for puzzle fans who don't mind repetitive game play but this series really needs a more serious upgrade.

58 CANNON SPIKE (Capcom, 2000)

This is a limited arcade shooter that's kind of like a Smash TV type game since it comes with lots of shooting action and fast paced game play. The only thing Cannon Spike needs is more substance for the home playing audience since even blasting your guns away all the time can get a little boring.

70 CHU CHU ROCKET (Sega, April 2000)

This is a very confusing game at first but it's still a fun one once you get the hang of it. You must race to get the most mice in one escape rocket before the Cat(s) get them first. Chu Chu Rocket is easily one of the worst looking games on the DC thanks to some weak 2D visuals but the game can still be very addictive in the multi-player modes.

77 CRAZY TAXI (Sega, 2000)
Driving a taxi may sound really boring but the action here is so quick and so unpredictable that it caused CT to become a instant hit. Here you can pick up all sorts of weirdo's and then drop them off by any means necessary but be sure to watch the clock or you may not get much cash. Although the game can get very repetitive, CT is a original idea for a racing game and it's just fun to play period.

70 DAYTONA USA (Sega/AM2, 2000)

Now here was a surprise release for Dreamcast, eh? The popular racing simulation made famous in the arcades and the Saturn comes to the Dreamcast as well. The game may be a bit dated since it was released in the late 1990's but the game still stands the test of time with excellent user friendly controls and well designed courses. Because of the power of the DC the game has amazing realistic graphics so you can forget about all the bland textures and pop up of the Saturn version and you can even play this online too. Daytona USA isn't anything new but great to see it make a comeback.

82 DEAD or ALIVE 2 (Tecmo, 2000)
This impressive one on one beat em up packs some excellent 3D graphics with highly detailed characters and environments plus great tag team action. The action can get kind of boring after awhile in the basic one player modes and the stories here don't make much sense but the two player can be fun if you both know how to play. The Dead or Alive series is famous for their over-the-top character models and this edition is no exception. The female ninja Kusami is one hot looking babe but I bet that most 16 teen year old ninjas don't look like that, Temco! DOA2 not only looks like million bucks but the fighting is quite intense as well.

The Total Recall Dud of the Month!
38 ECW HARDCORE REVOLUTION (Acclaim, March 1, 2000)

To warn you in advance: this is really Acclaim's WWF Attitude from the Summer of 1999 (also on the Dreamcast) but now that Acclaim has lost their big WWF license, they created a new wrestling game under a different wrestling company fewer people would know about. ECW at the time was gaining some serious popularity and Acclaim saw a opportunity but the game is a nightmare to control. If your into wrestling and your a ECW fan then please avoid the ECW games on Dreamcast anyway and pick up WWF No Mercy for the N64 or WWF SmackDown for the Playstation and create your own favourite ECW fighters instead of getting this piece of garbage.

73 FATAL FURY: Mark of the Wolves (Agetec/SNK, December 2001)
This is one of the last Dreamcast titles and it is also one of SNK's final arcade games which is a sad moment in video games history anyway you look at it. This Fatal Fury is one of the few 2D fighting games that can compete with the smooth animation of the Dreamcast version of Street Fighter III and the fighting system here is also decent. The game itself is nothing we have not seen before but it was still a solid fighting experience with some cool characters.

91 GRANDIA II (UBI Soft, December 2000)
I really didn't like the first Grandia for the Sony Playstation all that much but this sequel is impressive! You play the role of a renegade Geohound soldier named Ryoko that is hired to guard a young women in unknown mission to a strange tower. Things go horribly wrong and then the adventure really begins. The graphics are very smooth and the story really draws you in (it also has a more adult theme to it than the original Grandia). This is another outstanding RPG on the Sega Dreamcast.

GIGAWING 2 (Capcom, 2001)
This shooting game is bound to be one of Capcom's last game for then fading game system; the Sega Dreamcast, so I picked it up to see if it was any good. Unfortunately, because this game is so outrageously hard, Capcom put in unlimited continues, which may not seem like a bad idea at first but when you finish the game in just a half hour after dying for the say 50th time then you know something's very, very wrong here. As a diehard shooting fan myself, Giga Wing 2 left a bitter taste in my mouth because the game play just wasn't there. I would rent it if you have some friends over but I sure wouldn't buy it. "It's just not a fair game!"

26 GUNBIRD 2 (Capcom, 2000)
Welcome to another bullet hell game on the DC, like it or not. Gunbird 2 is a virtually unplayable arcade shooter that's litters the screen with bullets that are impossible to avoid especially in the later levels. There are no shields and the story is very strange and it will most likely not appeal to anyone. "I'm sticking with Star Soldier, an actually good shooter."

75 HOUSE of the DEAD 2 (Sega, 1999)
Perhaps HOTD is the ultimate light gun game? The game has killer 128-bit graphics, loud sounds, and it even has a story (although not a very good one). This is a carbon copy of the intense arcade original and if you don't know what House of the Dead is about then think Resident Evil with very geeky heroes. This shooter may be short but it's intense and it really puts you in the game at the same time.

79 HYDRO THUNDER (Midway, 1999)
Hydro Thunder is a fast paced, action packed racing game of speed boating right from the arcades. What make it so fun to play is the tracks have tons of short cuts and speed boosts are hidden throughout the 14 different tracks to keep the game more interesting in the long run. The racing isn't anything new but it's solid anyway and I love knocking over those police boats.

77 IKARUGA (ESP/Treasure, 2002)
*Japanese DC game
Yes, it's another shooter by the masterminds at Treasure and if you don't remember their last shoot em up then maybe you heard of the name Radiant Silvergun for Saturn before? That game alone will cost over 100 bucks on eBay. Those expecting the next Radiant Silvergun are going to be disappointed in Ikaruga here. This game features a 'no power up system' unlike in traditional shooters of the early nineties like Space Mega Force and Raiden II so you can forget about collecting gems, numbers, and other weird in air gadgets to upgrade your weaponry. OK, the game is a little on the basic side but it's still takes a lot of skill to master the game and there lays the beauty of Ikaruga.

The first King of the Fighters on the Dreamcast has some good animation and tons of characters as well. The only thing holding the game back here is the A.I. can be very cheap at times and some the 2D game play is getting a little old now as well.

59 MARVEL Vs. CAPCOM (Capcom, 1999)
This game has a lot fast and crazy two on two fighting action, but it's also way too similar to the game Marvel vs. Street Fighter and all other VS. titles out there from Capcom before it. Although M vs. C is arcade perfect, it also wears thin after awhile and it belongs in the arcades and not here on the Dreamcast unfortunately.

88 MARVEL Vs. CAPCOM 2 (Capcom, 2000)

This great fighting sequel not only as has a lot of cool secrets to unlock but there are over a massive 50 different characters too from both the Capcom and Marvel universes. Add to the fact that this fighting series is well known for its furious action so a fantastic game just got better. Marvel Vs. Capcom will be a pleasant surprise if you decide to play it. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is an excellent 2D fighter with amazing graphics but what's with the weird elevator music? It just doesn't feel or sound right in this type of game. 62 Midway's GREATEST ARCADE HITS Volume 2 (Midway, 2001)
Midway really surprised me with this one. There are six great arcade legends here (720 degrees, Gauntlet, Moon Patrol, Paperboy, Rampage, and Spy Hunter) to please anybody's needs and even the load times are minimum too. Sadly, you can forget about any bonus extras like developer interviews or history bios like in other collection sets since it's pretty bare bones here. Midway's GAH part 2 is a solid find especially for collectors but there should have been more games on the disc.

71 NAMCO MUSEUM (Namco/Mass Media, 2000)
I was ready to give this game a average rating for Namco Museum on Dreamcast for not having the cool Museum modes from the Playstation titles and for only having 6 games on one disc (there should be more), but only after a few moments of playing I realize that "I can't stop playing them!" I love all the games here (Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Galaga, Galaxian, Pole Position, and Dig Dug) on this collection this time (no annoying unheard of stuff like Toy Pop, Dragon Buster, or other crap from the past museums games) and now I can keep all my high scores saved in a VMU. Hey! If like the old school arcade games then this is for you! Playing games like Ms. Pac Man on the DC is a little too loose at times thanks to that bulky controller but that's a fairly minor complaint to a great game. Please don't get this if you're looking for the next great thing in video games. This is a must for retro fans, because you can't go wrong with a good Namco game..... even in there old age.

58 PSYCHIC FORCE 2012
(Acclaim/Taito, 1999)
Here is a free flying fighting game that has a women named 'Renina'. This is a one on one futurist fighters battle in a enclosed cube and characters can use both melee and long range weapons. Unfortunately, the whole cube gimmick wears thin and the game quickly loses it appeal after a few fights. 72 RESIDENT EVIL 2 (Capcom, 2000)

Resident Evil 2 may be one of those big zombie hunting games that's on many gamers Top 10 list but after playing and looking the Dreamcast version you can really see all of the game's problems. This horror game is just like the PS original and the backgrounds are still in fixed positions so you may be able to hear a zombie near by but it's hard to tell just how close it really is and that means you can get ambushed if you go to the next screen. This game also has overly awkward controls for a game that requires a lot careful running. Resident Evil 2 is still a great game and on Dreamcast may be sharper looking but who really cares?

44 SEGA SMASH PACK VOLUME 1 (Sega, 2001)

BEWARE! Although you get twelve legendary classics on one GD-Rom disc, 10 of them are emulated, and rather poorly I might add. The 10 emulated games are old Genesis/Mega Drive classics; Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Wrestle War, Streets of Rage 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Vectorman, Golden Axe, Columns, Phantasy Star II, and Shining Force. Not a bad collection of games, eh?" Wait till you play them!" You would think the all powerful 128-bit Dreamcast would be able to improve the weak 16-bit games but the opposite happened believe it or not! This is NOT a shot at one of my favorite game systems, (Sega Genesis) this is just my opinion of some really bad remakes. Avoid this game especially if your a true Sega Genesis fan.

SPACE CHANNEL 5 (Sega, 2000)

I love the whole 1960's outer space theme of Sega's Space Channel 5 and I'm sure all the guys out there will love all the short skirts too but the question is these same people like the basic button mashing game play? This game is very simple, you play as a very sexy news anchor that investigates an alien invasion where they are trying to force innocent humans to dance. Strange but true. In the game you must copy the alien movements and master the timing and then you might be able to stop the aliens. The game may appear to be a easy game for the whole family but you'll be surprised just how unforgiving the button pressing events can be here especially since there is no on screen icons showing you what happened. This game is too difficult for casual gamers and too weird for experts so it's no wonder Space Channel 5 wasn't a very big hit.

The game itself has a high learning curve and the list of options may just be too much for the average gamer. Buy WWF Attitude with caution.

51 WWF ROYAL RUMBLE (THQ/Yukes, July 2000)
I remembered when this new WWF game was suppose to be a Smackdown killer for the Dreamcast but that never happened. Here we have a simple arcade style wrestling game with basic, almost mindless controls, and shallow game play. There is NO career mode, NO Dudleys boyz, Too Cool, and many more superstars are not in this game. What's worst about this game is that there is NO create a player feature that's common place in almost any wrestling game now of days, so you can forget about making any of the fighters I previously mentioned before. WWF Royal Rumble is a bitter disappointment.

71 ZOMBIE REVENGE (Sega, 2000)
ZR plays like a arcade like Resident Evil-type of game and unlike those series of titles (Onimusha, Dino Crisis too) this game has fairly good control. The game has a cool B movie look to it but it's not very scary overall. Zombie Revenge is recommend for action seekers though but the game isn't too original.
