Down and Dirty Reviews:  Wii VC -- A - M

I love my Wii but sometimes the older stuff can be even better then the newer titles. Super Mario Bros. 3 is still ten times better then Balls of Fury for example! Of course Nintendo also re-releases a lot of duds on the Virtual Console too so be careful and read the reviews just to be warned ahead of time.

83 ACTRAISER (Enix, 2007)
*800 points
This great game here is not only a decent little platform game with good old hack 'n slash action but it's also a great simulation game as well. In the game guide a fallen spiritual warrior through 10 side scrolling levels of various monsters and then try to restore the towns they have destroyed. Actraiser may have impressive graphics and excellent music but the only downside to the game kind of short. It was still fun to rebuild this world here.

63 Hudson's ADVENTURE ISLAND (Hudson Soft, September 3, 2007)
*500 points
It's Sega's WonderBoy on the NES! Adventure Island is a fun game about a red cap wearing caveman trying to rescue a princess from generic evil monsters. Your hero starts out pretty weak and he needs constant fruit to stay alive but you can give him throwing axes and even a skateboard for extra power. There are tons of levels, lots of secrets, and plenty of challenges to overcome too but I wish the control were better while jumping and grabbing the skateboard forces you to go in one direction only. If you like action games and your sick of Super Mario Bros. then try this out.

79 AIR ZONK (TTI/Hudson Soft/Red, 2007)
*600 points
This is one crazy and action packed shooting game with cartoon like graphics and lots of strange characters like a dog and a giant missile as your friends. In this Turbografx game you're Zonk, a super cyborg send by Bonk himself to stop the King Drool of the future. Unfortunately it's a really short game with only 5 levels and unlimited continues as well. I AM THE WORLD'S BEST AIR ZONK PLAYER!! I was in EGM #45 and I got the score of 30, 332, 430 (Top score) See it at Twingalaxies and search for AIR ZONK and search for AIR ZONK

77 AXELAY (Konami, 2007)

*800 points
In this cool shooter you must save your peaceful planet from powerful invading alien fleets, the only problem is your all alone on the quest for freedom. Axelay is not as fun or as deep as Konami's early SNES shooter Gradius III but it looks a lot better in presentation. This game has amazing looking 3D and 2D effects and well designed art plus if that wasn't enough the music is also incredible. Sadly the game is a little on the short side with only 6 levels so the whole experience is a short one. If you love shooters though then this game is sure to please!

68 ALEX KIDD In The ENCHANTED CASTLE (Sega, 2007)
*800 points
This is the last known Alex Kidd game ever to be released on a gaming console (Sega Genesis) and fortunately this is another good looking game for the series. EC is very similar to the amazing Alex Kidd in Miracle World for the SMS upset for the much improved graphics, that also means you better be prepared for a challenging action game. Enchanted Castle is a pretty good download.

72 ALIEN CRUSH (Hudson Soft, December 10, 2006)
*600 points
This is one of the first Turbografx titles ever made in 1989 and surprisingly it isn't that bad either. Alien Crush is a cool looking pinball game on a unique all alien game table. Not only do you get to play on the main table with tons of multiple targets but there are 4 secret bonus areas to find for even bigger points. Alien Crush may be superior to those NES pinball titles but the awkward two split screen action here may drive some people crazy since it doesn't feel very realistic. Devil's Crush was the semi sequel to this game by the way and many agree that it was the superior pinball game but this one is still pretty fun and the Wii save feature also means you don't have to lose your high scores unless you reset it.

37 ART OF FIGHTING (SNK, October 2007)

*900 points
Awesome! As I'm writing this in October 2007 the first 3 Neo Geo games arrived on the Wii Virtual Console. This is one of those 3 games and I'm still wondering why? This fighting game was one of SNK's first Neo Geo games to break the big 100 Meg mark but sadly the title itself was nothing special. The game centers around a young martial artist named Ryo when his sister gets kidnapped and you need to get some answers from the local South Town tough guys if you hope to find her. The game plays like a second rate Street Fighter II with stiff controls, only 2 playable fighters (Ryo and Robert) in the story mode and limited play options.

75 BALLOON FIGHT (Nintendo, July 11, 2007)

*500 points
Balloon Fight is a super cute looking Joust-like game where players try to pop the other person's balloons to kill them. The player or opponent at the highest plane during a strike gets to destroy their enemy's balloon. The game is fun and very challenging but the game play isn't too compelling and the Game C is way too hard since it only takes one hit to end the adventure completely. Balloon Fight isn't a must have since it doesn't have a lot of depth but it can be a fun two player game.

25 BASEBALL (Nintendo, 2006)

*500 points
Nintendo Baseball is a decent two player game if you like the famous sport but the one player action gets duller then watching the Disney channel. The simple game play mechanics are certainly limited to what we today as well especially when it comes to the complete lack of control of those out fielders. This is one of the choices to play this relic if you can't find a old NES but it would be a pretty lame reason to get a Wii just for this game.

77 BLADES of STEEL (Konami, 2007)

*500 points
Although this is one of the first hockey games for the NES, it is still one of the best. For a 8-bit game Blades of Steel has some realistic looking players, digital voice samples, and intense arcade-like game play with dead on controls. I also love the up close fighting where you can fight a rival player one on one. Some of the music can be weird at times and the game ads for other Konami titles (although clever) were a little shameless but Blades of Steel is still great violent fun for fans of the sport.

90 BLAZING LAZERS (Hudson soft/Compile, 1989)
*600 points
Oh ya, it's back! In this famous Turbografx vertical scrolling shooter it's your mission here to pilot the 80 ton Gunhed Star fighter and go up against the Dark Squadron army lead by the mysterious enemy known as the Master Computer. This game is loaded with firepower and 9 huge levels, but the thing holding it back is that it's just way too easy for a shooter and can be easily finished the same day or week. Blazing Lazers still comes very recommend.

73 BLOODY WOLF (Data East, 1991)
*600 points
Bloody Wolf is very similar to Konami's Contra but this action run and gun game features some up close knife combat and an actual story line as well. In this Turbografx game you are on a mission behind enemy line so you can save the President from an army of terrorists. Believe it or not that's only half the game. The game has some fairly detailed graphics and there are lots power ups to find as well. Sadly there is no two player mode and the action can be a little slow at times too so Bloody Wolf won't please everyone.

92 BOMBERMAN '93 (Hudson Soft, 2006)
*600 points
The 93 Turbografx edition of everyone's favourite bomb expert features some of the weakest graphics for a game released in 1993 and it looks even weaker now on the Wii. You still get some old amazing party mayhem that highlight this awesome version of Bomberman though and who doesn't like blowing things up? You get both an excellent multi-player in battle mode with 10 different levels to try out with a new Kick power up where you can get bombs out of your face in a hurry and the one player mode is improved over the original and it's a good way to eat up some time but it is still a little on the slow side. Bomberman 93 is a awesome party game to have around.

82 BONK'S ADVENTURE (Hudson Soft/Red, 2006)
*600 points
Here is prehaps the biggest hit for the Turbografx and now it's on the Wii. Bonk is a very fun game featuring everyone's favourite head-butting caveman who is trying to save Princess Za and her homeland. The only real problem with Bonk's Adventure is that it was far too easy and it only comes with only 5 levels here. Sure, it's a great game for the kids and the casual player but the pro gamers will be done with this game in a few minutes or hours, no problem. It is still worth the points though.

85 BONK'S REVENGE (Hudson Soft/Red, April 2006)
*600 points
Maybe the best Bonk game out there because the game is filled with tons of secrets and bonus levels all over the place. Although the controls are not as tight as the first game, it also makes it a tougher, more challenging quest for Bonk this time. In the game you can now fly, change into a crab and if you collect 50 smiley's or higher on a level then when you beat the boss you will warp pass one whole level which makes going to the bonus levels worthwhile. Definitely an above average action game for the Turbografx and the Wii.

31 BRAVOMAN (Namco, 2007)

*600 points
Super heroes and video games should go hand and hand so a game like Bravoman should be a stand out title but there are definitely a few things holding it back. This weird looking game is about a hero with the ability to use long limbs to strike his foes down and he is going to need all the power he has to stop his nemesis Dr. Bomb and his many minions. The game is a little on the hard side since there are 22 levels plus why there is only one life per every continue? Bravoman also has some of the worst voices in a video game and that alone may drive a lot gamers away. Bravoman is not only a cookie cutter hero but his game is chunky and horrible.

84 BUBBLE BOBBLE (Taito, December 31, 2007)
*500 points
This wild action game here is just like the fun arcade game starring two bubble blowing dinos trying to rescue their girlfriends from several cute but deadly monsters. One of the coolest things about Bubble Bobble that is supports 2 players at once and other then a few flickers here and there this mode works well. Another good thing about the game is there are well over a 100 levels to see here plus there are tons of unique power ups to collect too so this is one big game. Although the game is a lot of fun, the game does a few things that bust my balls. For example it only takes one hit and you're dead plus some stages like stage 57 are just insanely tough to beat because you have to jump on your bubbles to get to the top where the enemies are continuing shooting at you. Despite a few problems the game is still very easy to get into so Bubble Bobble is great for both casual and expert players. It may be tougher to find then most NES titles but it's well worth the extra effort.

84 CASTLEVANIA (Konami, April 30, 2006)
*500 points
With all the evil slaying action and 6 challenging levels included, Castlevania on NES is arcade perfect. If you like old horror movies you'll love the theme of this game. Simon Belmont uses his father's legendary whip to rid the world of the evil Count Dracula and his army of monsters. The later levels are especially difficult since it only takes four hits to kill you off but it's not too impossible and the controls are simple enough for anybody to learn easily and the added save function of the Wii doesn't hurt either. Castlevania may seem basic now but the game play is timeless.

66 CASTLEVANIA II: Simon's Quest (Konami, 2007)
*500 points
Castlevania II is definitely the black sheep of the Castlevania NES trilogy (just ask James Rolfe) but it is still a pretty addictive mission for Dracula's 5 missing body parts in hopes of putting a end Simon Belmont's deadly curse once and for all. The game is very non linear in design this time now so you have the decision of going to different towns or dungeons whenever you want plus it also has three different endings too so the replay value is there too. Unfortunately, Castlevania II can also be very confusing to play especially since the in-game dialogue was very poorly translated. If you decide to play this game it is highly recommend you get some kind of strategy guide because the game is loaded with strange secrets and hidden areas that aren't explained very well. Castlevania II is still a good action/adventure title but I can still see why the third game plays more like the first one.

7 CHEW MAN FU (Hudson Soft, 1990)
*600 points
Now here's a TG-16 game you don't see everyday. In Chew Man Fu you get to guide a young girl through several rooms to the stop the evil magician Chew Man Fu. The thing that makes this puzzle game so special is she can use a huge stone ball to smackdown enemies and bust up walls. The game is filled with hundreds of levels and it even supports two players at once so there is a lot of replay value here. OK, the whole thing can get repetitive but if you like puzzle games with a bit of action then this is good bang for the buck.

42 CHINA WARRIOR (Hudson Soft, 2007)

*600 points
China Warrior is a very limited side scrolling beat em up starring some fighter who looks very similar to Bruce Lee. The characters are quite huge and even fairly detailed as well as some of them fill up nearly a quarter of the screen but of course, they are also very stiff looking in the process so there's a trade off. Another problem with this game is the constant looping music which doesn't even change when you enter a new set of levels. China Warrior was only created to show off the Turbo Grafx-16 graphical abilities, because the game play is laughable when compared to a real fighting game like Double Dragon.

Here is one awesome looking game where you become part of your own comic book story line in a weird twist of faith. 40 COLUMNS (Sega, 2006)

*800 points
Sega's answer to Tetris is merely a shell of the Russian classic. In this Genesis game you line up multiple coloured gems of the same type to make them disappear, sounds familiar eh? One of the problems I have with the game is the lack of play modes here. There is just a basic Arcade mode for 1 or 2 players so this is barely passable as far as puzzlers go. The game can be playable but it has really aged badly so don't spend too much points on this in other words (hopefully there is a discount in the future, eh?).

55 CRATERMAZE (Hudson Soft, 2007)

*500 points
If you are looking for more puzzle games on the Turbo then this one may interest you even if it's pretty damn boring. In Crater maze you control a space man that's on a mission to save your kidnapped friends. There are a sh*&load of levels here where you collect power ups and dig holes to trap enemies (who are apparently all Christian because they leave crosses once killed here) but they really don't change too much from one stage to the next kind of like Bomberman. The graphics are colourful but plain plus the background music is lame as well. The game can be fun but don't expect a lot of thrilling action either.

65 DEAD MOON (Natsume, 2007)

*600 points
Holy crap, how many shooters do we need on this TG16 system here? OK, I'll shut up and just do the review. In Dead Moon you must defend the earth against alien attackers that have invaded the moon. The game starts off quite good because the action is fast paced and there are power ups are all over the place as well. The graphics and sounds are not too bad either too with colourful enemies and decent music but the backgrounds do repeat often and the sound effects are nothing special either. The game is fun to play but you can do better.

90 DEVIL'S CRUSH (Naxat Soft, 2007)
*600 points
Devil's Crush is a medieval style pinball game with great control, good sounds, nice graphics, and if you become good enough you can even see a real ending here. It's hard for me to get too excited over a Pinball video game especially since you're only playing on one (although fairly large) table but this title has tons of secret bonuses to unlock for bigger points and that's really enough to drive any player to continue here. This game is also on the Sega Genesis under the name Dragon's Fury.

35 DONKEY KONG (Nintendo, November 19, 2006)

*500 points
Here is Nintendo's famous mega hit Donkey Kong for their own Nintendo Entertainment System originally back in 1986, but sadly, even though it was made by the masters themselves it's hardly arcade perfect. Where's the entire conveyer belt level for one? If you want to play a arcade perfect addition of this legendary action title than play Donkey Kong 64 plus unlock the original game there and then play that instead because that's as close as you may after get now of days. Come on, Nintendo! Put this lame NES edition to sleep because this is the 5th time I seen this NES game re-released and it just looks embarrassing especially here on the Wii. Donkey Kong may be good to have around the house for some minor sentimental value but I can't see anybody playing this on a regular basis thanks to simple game play and Nintendo's lackluster effort with their own game.

87 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY (Nintendo/Rare, November 1994)

*800 points
It's the long awaited return of Donkey Kong after nearly a decade of nearly nothing believe it or not. This awesome 32 meg update to the arcade classic uses computer rendered 2D graphics so the game even looks better than most 32-bit 3DO and 64-bit Atari Jaguar titles. The game also has realistic sound effects but the music isn't as impressive. This plays similar to Nintendo's earlier Super Mario World but with more linear levels and much nicer graphics of course.

68 DONKEY KONG JR. (Nintendo, 2006)
*500 points
In this big NES sequel you play as Donkey Kong's son on a rescue mission to save your father from the evil Mario? Yes, it's true! Mario is the bad guy in this game believe it or not. Talk about a very cool idea for the sequel! Like Donkey Kong this is 2D action platformer where you jump around to get where you're going but Jr. can also climb loose vines to reach higher areas and reach bonus fruits for points. This game even comes with all 4 arcade stages so it's already a better translation then the last game. Unfortunately, the game is still based on a 1982 game so the action isn't as complex as most NES titles out there on the Wii VC even though it's still pretty fun to play.

10 DOUBLE DUNGEONS (NCS, 2007)

What the hell! Why they release this dud here on the Wii? This is nothing but a totally boring dungeon based RPG much like the older Might and Magic series but only much worse. This ugly 3D role playing game would have been decent if I didn't get lost all the time but everything looks the same and there should have been some kind of in game overhead map system to guide the gamer here as well. This is really a Puyo Puyo game that got renamed after the big bad fat guy of Sonic The Hedgehog fame. In this Sega Genesis game you battle some of Dr. Robotnik's robots by matching up coloured blobs to make disappear. If your opponent screen gets filled with blobs you win. Although it didn't sell all that well its still one of the best selling puzzlers in Japan and the game is still pretty fun and easy to get into as well. It's Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap from the Sega Master System and it got ported to the Turbo on it's on the Wii too (long story). This Master system classic even comes here with minor graphical and sound improvements for us lucky Turbo Grafx-16 fans. If you never played this game before, here is what's going on. Dragon's Cure is a cute adventure game where you are a sword weilding hero who has to deal with different strange animal powers on a long quest to regain your original human form. Although it's lame that Hudson Soft didn't try to improve the graphics and sounds even more since this is on the Turbo, Dragon's Curse is a fun and challenging action title for gamers of all ages.

Here is another shooter on the Turbo but unlike most of the others here this features a young prince who transforms into a fire breathing dragon. In the game you must save a beautiful princess (I hope she's beautiful anyway since there is no opening story here) from a evil army of demons across 8 deadly levels. Like Namco's classic shoot em up Xevious enemies attack from both the sky and the ground. The ending was kind of cool because it had an Namco retrospective but I won't go any further then that. Dragon Spirit is not one of the prettiest shooters on the system thanks to some bland graphics but the list of power ups and attacks is not too bad.

Dungeon Explorer is a very fun action/adventure game originally on the Turbografx with lots of playable characters ranging from warriors, witches, dwarfs, and you can even find secret characters like a princess and a hermit if you play long enough as well. Can you survive all 14 levels here without turning on your friends or will you go to complete the main objective and save your kingdom from the evil Natas? 55 FATAL FURY (Tanaka/SNK, October 2007)

*900 points
In this popular Neo Geo classic you pick get to pick from 3 fighters and try to go after the crime boss of South Town in the first Fatal Fury. There are a lot of men standing in your way like the 400 pound Raiden and an old man with a bad steriod problem. The game is simple; the person who wins the best 2 out of 3 bouts wins the match. This was definitely a big hit for the folks at SNK but there are a few problems that age is a bit like unbalanced special moves and there are very limited moves per character. There is no half naked Mai here either so although the game is fun, I would wait for the better future editions.

65 GALAGA: Demons of Death (Bandai/Namco, 2007)
*500 points
This Galaga here is the port done on the NES but at least is a near arcade perfect translation of the early eighties space shooting hit. Maybe a few of you heard of it already, eh? In Galaga you use your advance star fighter to save the galaxy from a deadly race of flying bugs that get harder and harder to kill in each level. This was originally the sequel to Galaxian and it not only features better graphics and sounds but the intense new faster game play really makes the previous game out dated too. You can now power up your ship with double fire power by losing one of other ships to a tractor beam enemy and by getting it back (that's if you don't shoot it by accident of course). This is still a awesome shooting video game even today but it's a shame you can't save your scores here and the action can get repetitive as well. Galaga is great for retro buffs but other NES gamers use to titles like Twin Cobra will not be that impressed.

Here is a Sega Genesis classic! In a fantasy medieval age, three brave warriors try to get their revenge with the man with the Golden Axe; the evil Death Adder. Golden Axe is a free roaming fighting game where you fight off hordes of enemies until you reach the boss guardian. Although the odds are against you, each one of the warriors can use powerful magic and the more potions you find, the more powerful the spell. The game also features two new levels not in the arcade game plus it also includes a new duel mode for single or two player battles. 97 GUNSTAR HEROES (Sega/Treasure, December 10, 2006)

*800 points
Surprisingly one of the best games on the Sega Genesis is also one of the first Genesis games on the Wii VC here. Gunstar Heroes may seem like a odd name for a video game but if you give it a chance you'll see that this game has some advance 2D and 3D graphics, decent music, and high octane action for two players. With only 7 levels here the game is a little too short and it left me wanting more but it was still a wild ride while it lasted. Despite the questionable length don't forget that game still plays incredible and the depth is also fairly amazing. Gunstar Heroes is just a very wild game with excellent graphics and music so it is well worth the small 800 points!

29 ICE CLIMBERS (Nintendo, 2007)

*500 points
In this original NES title here you control one of two little Eskimos with hammers trying to reach the top of the stage. Enemies like polar bears and other fuzzy creatures will try to kill you as well but you knock them out if they get in the way but sadly Nintendo took out the baby seals in the North American version so you can't beat them with hammers like in the original Japanese game. Once you reach the top there is a timed bonus game where you either try to get the food or go after the giant bird instead to complete the stage. It starts out easy and the concept is good but the reason this game was never a success was because the controls of the jumps are super slow and really sluggish here. Ice Climbers doesn't age well.

78 ICE HOCKEY (Nintendo, December 2006)
*500 points
Nintendo's NES Ice Hockey is simple and very easy to play game of the famous Canadian sport. The famous feature here is the unique ability to create three different sizes of players for a team of four so you can either mix with a team of skinny to heavy players for that combo of speed and power or you can do a team with all smaller players to out run everyone for example. Sure we don't get the usually season, create a player mode that are in other modern Hockey video games but maybe we are too spoiled in this day and age, eh? Ice Hockey is a very fun game especially for two players.

48 JJ & JEFF (Hudson Soft, 2007)

*600 points
This wacky 2 meg game looks a lot like the original Super Mario Bros. by Nintendo but your heroes wears purple business suits and have giant heads. Although the game may look silly JJ & Jeff is a very, VERY tough action game with draining health, annoying enemies, and 24 long and unforgiving levels. At least there are loads of secrets to discover along the way to help you out but overall you're still going to be cursing a lot here. The ending here is really goofy too....... much like the game itself. JJ & Jeff is a great game for people looking for punishment but because of that casual gamers should go no where near this.

78 KID ICARUS (Nintendo, 2007)
*500 points
Kid Icarus is a hard but fun angel game with loads of challenges to master in both linear and non linear stages. In this NES game you help the young angel named Pit on a mission to destroy the evil Medusa in this 2D action game. Don't let the cute look and good controls fool you because this is one is pretty deep and very challenging here.

23 KING'S KNIGHT (Square, March 31 2008)
*500 points
One of Square's worst games ever and it wasn't even a big hit in Japan either. King's Knight is one stupid forced scrolling shooting game starring four boring characters in near impossible scenarios. Once one of the characters dies you just move on to the next one which may sound like a cool way to juice up the adventure but the basic lame shooting and avoiding game play is the same for each. I have a good question: why would Square release this horrible game here and NOT release the real Final Fantasy 2 and 3 here?

96 KIRBY'S ADVENTURE (Nintendo/Hal, 2007)
*500 points
The first and last 6 mega bit game (that means the game has a lot memory n' stuff) for the 8-bit Nintendo is this awesome looking Kirby title here. Kirby is a cute little pink blob thing that can jump high in the air plus he can suck up certain enemies and steal their power. Since the game is geared to the kids it's a little on the easy side but Kirby is still a fairly huge game with over 30 levels to explore and most importly it's very fun to play too. With it's combination of solid graphics and sounds Kirby's Adventure is another must have for the NES and a great download on the Wii.

41 LEGEND of KAGE (Taito, 2007)

*500 points
In this NES game you're a skilled ninja on a rescue mission to save Princess Kiri from the evil Yoshi (no relation to that stupid green dinosaur). You have to battle through 4 levels of very routine arcade action that just keeps on looping after you saved the girl and it doesn't take long to get with throwing ninja stars at under paid thugs. Legend of Kage is a good and quick action game ruined by too much repetition.

97 The LEGEND of ZELDA (Nintendo, 2006)
*500 points
Here is the original that started it all! The NES Legend of Zelda is a huge quest to save princess Zelda from the evil giant pig creature known as Ganon. It won't be easy because you have no idea where she is and you must first find the 8 pieces of the legendary Triforce to even enter Ganon's lair. You must search through dangerous countryside and dark dungeons to find the necessary items to survive Ganon's army. Because the game is so big the game includes a Save feature so you can shut off the console and continue the game later. Yeah, that happens in a lot of games now but the Legend of Zelda here was the first ever home video game to feature this save option, how cool is that? Although the graphics are not much to look at, the Legend of Zelda is still one of the best adventure/action games ever made with fast game play and tons of secrets.

92 LEGEND of ZELDA: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, 2007)

*Classic or GC controller needed
In this huge 3D game made popular on the Nintendo64 your hero Link must now travel through time to save his land from a powerful madman bend on its destruction. Some parts of the game are either too hard or too easy plus there is little to do after the game is all done, but these are the only things that kept me from giving this game a perfect score. Although it's a shame there is no rumble feature, the game is so big and so interactive that it should take about a good month to fully finish. Legend of Zelda 64 is a awesome 256 meg (the first 256 meg game for the N64 btw) action/adventure game and it is perhaps the ultimate action RPG.

65 LOLO (Hal, July 2007)

*500 points
Lolo is a very tough NES puzzle game featuring cute characters in many enclosed rooms filled with hazards, treasures, and enemies. The brave little Lolo haves to save his sugar mommy Princess Lala from a evil big demon thing but to do this so he will have to survive several deadly challenges in a old castle. The stages start off easy but the levels quickly get more and more complex like for example when you have to unlock power ups to kill enemies and place blockers in the right area to protect you from needles. Lolo is good puzzle title with tons of levels but be ready for one tough game that will likely piss off anyone.

87 LORDS of THUNDER (Hudson Soft, 2008)
*800 points
Before the Duo kicked the bucket there was still some fight in the old girl because Lords of Thunder is one of the best shooters in Turbografx history. In the game here you must help a flying warrior use powerful magic to take back the elements of earth. The thing that makes the game one of the better shooting titles on the machine is all the impressive weaponry, stunning graphics, and intense action. Lords of Thunder is not too different from the Gate of Thunder title which also appeared on the Duo, however you have to love the new theme and some more diverse attacks, eh? This game not only comes packed with some nice looking graphics but the game also has cool heavy metal music too. What more could you want in a shooter?

50 LUNAR POOL (FCI, 2007)

*500 points
Here is a fun little NES pool game that's easy to pick up and play. The gimmick here is you are playing in space and the only way you can tell is by the lame craters in the background. The game is really nothing more then a really basic pool (move cursor, hit ball, hopefully it sinks) game with each table having a different pattern to add some challenge to your shots. It's nothing special and the graphics and sounds get old fast but it is playable.

60 MARIO BROS. (Nintendo, 2006)
*500 points
The original Mario Bros here on the NES is not only a challenging action title that never seems to end but it's still a good two player game as well. Are you the type of player that wants to help your friend to complete the levels or are you the friend that wants to hog all the glory and points instead yourself? The game certainly isn't as complex as the sequel Super Mario Bros. but it was the cool two player option that helped saved it from being a dud.

81 MARIO KART 64 (Nintendo, 2007)
*1000 points
*Classic or GC controller needed
It's the big sequel to the SNES classic here on the N64 and Wii. In Mario Kart 64 you control one of eight Nintendo characters and then you compete in a go-kart racing grand prix. The computer cheats at times and the controls can be a bit rough at times but it's still a pretty fun racing game much like the Super Nintendo original but now there is no split screen graphics in the one player games which I like. It's a shame you can't save your ghost times to a memory cart or card anymore but the game is still fun in the new 2 to 4 multi-player modes here and that's something you don't alway see on the Wii here.

METROID (Nintendo, 2007)
*500 points
The legendary first Metroid started right here on the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) way back in 1987. Although this is only a single Meg 8-bit game with outdated graphics and all, it's still one of the greatest adventure games ever made and I'm gonna tell you why. In it you help space warrior Samus Aran defeat the evil pirates of planet Zebes who are breeding powerful Metroid creatures to conquer the universe. Even in it's old age, Metroid is still an excellent action/adventure gaming experience with a huge amount Easter eggs to keep players wanting more and the simple graphics and sounds were too bad either. Whether you play it on a NES, Game Cube, or Wii here; Metroid is a must for any generation!

MILITARY MADNESS (Hudson Soft, December 17, 2006)
*600 points
This cool Turbografx game is a very addictive war/board-like game where you have to take turns to fight for control of the moon. Military Madness has loads of different tanks, ground fighters, and aircrafts ready for war and there are 32 levels here in all so you'll be playing this one for awhile. Another interesting thing about this game is that your units can gain experience the more they battle. Sadly the Wii version had this annoying feature where the game slows down every time you scroll the screen which happans a lot by the way. Fortunately there is now a update that fixes the problem now at least. Military Madness takes a few tries to understand what's going on but it's still an incredible strategy title.

76 MILON'S SECRET CASTLE (Hudson Soft, 2006)

*500 points
Want a real challenge? Milon's Secret Castle is a good but very tough action platformer starring a young wizard and his mission to fight his way through a huge deadly castle. Trust me when I say this is one challenging game because a lot of the secrets in the game need to be discovered first if you want to get anywhere here but if you can master the game a bit it's also a very addictive adventure too especially with it's decent graphics and music. Milon's Secret Castle is a great NES title that's for experts only.

51 MONSTER LAIR (Hudson Soft/Alfa System, 2007)

*800 points
The Second official game for the Turbografx-16 CD system is this simple and rather unremarkable platformer/shooter starring the Wonder Boy and the princess he's always trying to save. Monster Lair may look cute but this is still a very difficult game with 14 long levels and an annoying draining health meter. Although the game can be fun, I don't understand why this was originally a Turbo CD game and not made on a card instead?
